Just not happy at all

Since I purchased my Lian Li v2100+2 case I have tried everything to get it as silent as I can.

The main problem is the vibrations going through the case VIA the hard drives and sometimes the DVDRW. I have even put blue tack on each side of the DVDRW to try and absorb some of the vibrations from the drive. I have 8 SATA drives in the bottom of the case (only 5 are on at one time). I have also got 2 drives in the 5.25bays these are inside the Antec HD coolers (without the fans there were to noisy).

I have also changed the front & back 120mm fans to Sharkoon 1000 Silent Eagle. I just can’t stop the vibrations at all going through the case…does anyone have any idea what I can do to stop these vibrations. If I could stop them then I would be a happy man.

could you mod the section which holds the hard drives?

i don't know if its possible but remove the 3 and 1/4 bays and put a 5 and 1/4 bay down there ?

to be honest with 8 hdd i dont think there would be a easy answer, 8 external hdd :p?

with 8 of them in a case, if they all produce a small amount of noise it will be multiplied meaning they would literally have to be silent.

cant you lower the amount of hdd? buy bigger hdd and transfer the data to them ?

If you look @ the inside of the case..you will see 3 red rectangles now this is where I have 2 SATA drives & 1 DVDRW. The SATA drives are enclosed in Antec coolers.

Now at the bottom you will see space for another 12 drives, which 8 are filled.

The only way to get them all quiet is to rip out the 2 x 6 (12) rack bays.. and if it is possible to add a 6/8 rack 5.25 bay there instead...this way I can use hard drive silencers.

Anyone else got any better idea's??

I got this case m8 so I could put drives in it which were hanging around on the floor....would have been pointless to put them all in external cases (but looking @ it now it's not pointless).

All the drives in there at the moment are all 500GB drives...don't really want to be forking out more money on more drives...I would rather spend the money on trying to silence them a bit...the cost would be less.

Get rubber hard drive grommets they actually work can get them in that high st electrical/computer shop with the blue sign.

You might want to consider a NAS machine. I don't know what you use you computer to do but it's fairly likely that some of those drives are only occasionally accessed. With a NAS you could place storage drives elsewhere on your network; think in the basement, the attic, a closet, or any other place that would be safe for computer equipment but away from major activity. You'd remove the vast majority of the HDD noise. Gigabit Ethernet is about twice as fast as any SATA hard disk.

Was just thinkin the same thing m8...;)

I was going to try using thin strips of blue tack on each side of the rails then slide the drives in...I will try this tomorrow...bit late now I'm off to bed.

It's the contact on the screws which is creating the most noise i added grommets to my eclipse a known noisy hdd reverberation case it's lowered the noise a great deal.
So there's no contact between screws and chassis the rubber is there.

the only other thing you could do is look into removing the hdd mounts at the bottom and mod the mounts themselfs were contact is made to the rest of the case to stop the vibrations traveling a greater distance through the case.
drill out the fixing rivets and use nuts and bolts with rubber grommets at the front of the bolt between the rack and the case and were the nut is fitted so its like a triple decker sandwich. this should help quite a bit ,though just an idea.

Right what I have done is pulled 3 of the drives out for now and put a little amount of blu tack in the rails near the bottom. I didn’t push the drive all the way down because I wanted to add a little bit more blu tack for the top screw. So before the top screw goes in I used a bit more blu tack, and then pushed the drive gently into place. The drives seem a lot tighter in place now than they did before which is what I wanted because they felt lose before adding the blu tack.

I don’t think rubber grommets will fit in these racks so blu tack is probably the best option.

Just turned it on and the difference is noticeable right away. Think I will do the other 5 drives like this.

So you have all 10 HDD's constantly running at the same time?

No m8 the maximum I run at the same time is 7...5 x SATA & 2 off the IDE...I have a SATA DVDRW so this takes up 1 SATA port. I miss my Gigabyte board that had 8 SATA ports on it...Asus should really put more SATA ports on their motherboards (I have the Asus P5B Deluxe).

dont see what the problem with a slightly noisey pc is, load a game, and crank the vol up - stick your headphones on... job done cant hear it! my pc is noisey as hell, but tbh i dont care.
