I bought a new iMac 20 inch and I want to run bootcamp. However the Windows XP disc I have does not have SP2, I can buy a used Windows XP SP2 disc without a key on the internet much cheaper than the OEM price.

I was wondering if my old Windows XP key would work with the new SP2 disc? I'm fairly certain it will as it is the same OS but I wanted to make sure.

Also, if the Windows XP disc is a Pro edition, will that work as well?

Thanks in advance.

Use nLite to slipstream SP2 into your existing disk. It's a great thing and it's easy to use. :)

EDIT: You should also take the opportunity to install update packs ans all the .NETs. It saves a lot of time in avoiding the hours-long Windows Update cycle when installing a new machine.

I have used that before and sometimes files were missing or corrupt, I really can't be bothered having to make a slipstream and I would rather just pay £10 or so.

Will an XP Home key work with the Professional version?

EDIT:

I did actually try a slipstream and I think this is what mesed up my old iMac when installing bootcamp. I only had it for less than a week and I tried installing bootcamp with the slipstream but then it had messed up the hard drive.

I bought an external hard drive to backup mac osx, so if anything goes wrong I can boot off this drive and copy it to the internal drive?

I think I can use CarbonCopyCloner or something like that, haven't looked into it yet.

I'll have to dig out my old PC to use nlite. I'm sorry I keep going off topic the more I write, but is there anywhere in the UK (specifically Scotland) where I can sell built up computers?

I have 2 computers here which aren't getting any use and to sell all the parts seperately will be a bit of a pain.

Thanks for all the help, appreciate it.
