Hi all,

Well I phoned in sick Friday and Monday this week as I had some sort of flu bug along with the worst sore throat EVER.

Anyways, I woke up this morning feeling better, still not 100% well but off I went to work anyways. Now my desk is situated right underneath a big aircon unit and I have cold air blowing down on me for 8 hours of the day. Slowly throughout the day today I've started to feel worse. My coughs are getting worse and more painful, i'm choking up more and more flem from my chest and nose and I've also had a headache since getting to work.

I'm at home now and I really do feel crap. Could aircon have this affect as I'm really considering not going into work again until i'm 100% better.

I never used to get colds until I moved into an office with aircon. I now get two a year on average.

Aircon? Service? My employer has NEVER had theirs serviced since moving into the current premises, about 18 years ago

As for whether it makes you worse, it does IME. Aircon really dries the air out, and with any kind of throat/nose/chest bug it can only make it worse.

You should have a word with the maintenance chap or your facilities manager to have some diffuser installed or the damper closed to reduce the air flow.

What type of A/C unit is it, do you adjust the thermostat yourself or is part of the building ventilation system. ie grill in the ceiling and no thermostat on the wall or controler.

It's the big grill type in the ceiling and is part of the building ventilation system.

I think there's something doing the round as I had exactly the same thing last week and am still congested from it. Aircons can help circulate these bugs around as well as keeping you at an an uncomfortable temperature.

You shouldn't really have any gripe in telling your employer though. It's in his best interests that your not freezing your nads off.

I have the same issue... theres certain members of our department that refuses to take time off whe they a suffering with cold/flu/man-flu, leaving tissues everwhere. You can tell which person was originally sick as it will spread from them and the staff will drop off like flies and the people that sit under the aircon will likley phone it sick first.

It does help me as I sit under an air con and I had TB when I was a kid so my lungs ain't the best, as soon as I get a cold; it stops me breathing correctly; causes my head aches... ohhhh... the pain.
