HD 2900XT vs 8800GTS

Exactly. I think it's a testiment to ATi's driver team that they managed to turn what was a poor card at launch, into something that beats the 8800GTS.

Sure, Dx10 is a bit slower, but i'm sure that will improve. :)
If they got it out of the door about six months earlier I would've been impressed (and bought one.)

And it's still debatable it actually "beats" the GTS as far as I know, six of one and half-dozen of the other.

Indeed. DX10 isn't my thing, the only thing I can say I'm disappointed with when it comes to ATI is the AA capability. It's there but hinders performance a lot, the Quake Wars demo at 2x AA High settings dipping into 20s.

What res?? at 1280x1024 4xaa 16xaf max settings the lowest ive seen in fraps was 45 , averaging over 65fps.

Just been thinking how funny its turned out, as wasn't it ATi who were touted as going to be the dogs gonads at Dx10 due to their experiance from working on the 360, aint turned out that way has it. :p

I never understood why people said that since the 360 doesn't use DX10, it uses an expanded DX9. :D

Well if you crave silence or have a more modest PSU then the GTS is a good choice (at least until we get some aftermarket coolers for the 2900).

But given where the 2900 stands today, although it's overall very close i'd say it is faster than the GTS. :)

In the writing the 2900 SHOULD be better, but it never seems that way in benchmarks.
Maybe its ****** drivers holding it back?
Which is shocking because prior to all this, I found ATI to have superior driver support in the past.

The 2900 ought to be the better card, but the GTS seems to be a lot more consistant across the board. There's nothing more annoying than a really great card that seems to fall short in certain games or circumstances.

I hate to not recommend what should be the faster card, but I have to vote for the GTS for a more stable experiance :o Of course it does depend on what you play.

A final note, most of the newest game engines have had a lot more developement time on the G80, as it's been around a lot longer.

Nobody ever said that, it was the fact they had the first unified pipeline chip that people thought they would have an advantage over nvidia since it was around well over a year before the 8800.

Besides that people thought ati would have some kind of advantage since they worked more with ms on dx10.

Im in the same boat now, will the 2900 improve enough in the coming months? thats the big question, it has in DX9 but if it doesnt in DX10 I would be very disappointed :(
But if I go BACK to an 8800GTS I know the memory leakage with the 320mb is a thing of the past and I can get one of them pretty cheap!
Crysis and DX10 will be my deciding factor but god only knows how these cards will perform. Im pretty certain @ the early stages the 8800>2900 in it.
