Which car? Quite a few to choose from.....

I have been thinking for quite a while now and have decided that I am going to hang up my riding gear for a while and sell my motorbike (Honda SP-2). I have ridden for 10years but for some reason don't get the enjoyment out of it that I used to anymore. So with the money I make from selling the bike and aftermarket bits I have for it (totalling £6000 fingers crossed) and selling my current car a Pug 306gti 6 phase 3 which I would hope I get £2500-£3000 for plus a bit of money I have lying around I think I should be able to stretch to a £10,000 budget for a new car. I do really like my Pug but it could do with a little bit more oomph. I can't fault the handling of it though and I think will be one thing I find hard to find in my next car.

I am still not 100% sure what I want in my next car. As in whether I still want a hot hatch or something a little more refined like a 330ci. I even have been looking at an M3 E36 Evo but I worry about running costs of it. I currently spend about £600 per year taxing, MOT, Insurance on the bike so would like to keep the extra bills for running my new car no higher than this. I am 29 and have 4years no claims but I could use my 9years of bike no claims to bump it up but I am not going to just in case in a few years time I end up going back.

Here is my current list of possibilities

Seat Cupra R. Like the looks of these. Quite practical being 4door. Not sure what they handle like? Have heard the paint finish isn't too good. Turbo car so easily tunable.

Civic Type R. 2004 onwards facelift model. Seems fast for what it is. Reliable N/A engine, not sure how easy it is to get a little more oomph from them? Read about the light steering feel and not sure I would like that after the Pug.

BMW 330ci E46. I'm a total BMW noob! Can you get different variants of the 330ci? Seem reasonably nippy though I'm not sure what its like compared to the other cars I have listed. No idea how they handle? Quite liking the idea of speed in comfortable surroundings. Easy to get a bit more hp out of?

BMW M3 E36. Whilst I can afford to get one can I afford to run it? I read something about Vanos? Being a common problem on these and that they aren't cheap to replace. Fastest car of the ones I have listed and they do sound nice. Insurance is double that of the Civic and Cupra for me, though I was only using directline as a guage.

Renault Megane 225 Cup/Trophy or the R26 F1. The cup / trophy are easier to find. Seem fast and handle well. Sloppy gear stick is mentioned a lot in right ups. French electrics though? I have had to put up with these for a few years already. The R26 F1 version has 5hp more an LSD and better suspension still but might just be outside of my price range. Turbo car though so can get good hp gains pretty easily.

Audi S3. Same engine as the Cupra R but with 4 wheel drive, well Haldrex thing or whatever it is. Servicing costs worry me a little, how do they handle?

Integra DC5. I have seen a few around the £10000 mark now and I love the styling of these. I know they handle great and don't go to bad either. Revvy engine I am aware, just like the civic. Again how easy to gain a few hp? Downside is insurance is a fair bit higher but again might just be as I only used directline.

As you can see most of the cars are more hot hatch type ones but I have been seriously considering the BMW's. I know they probably aren't quite as chuckable as the other cars on my list but I'm not sure how much I would miss that. The other downside to the BMW's is that the milage of these cars will be higher than that of the others for the same price.

The reason I mention how easy is it to get a few more hp out of each car is due to the fact I will probably have this car for 3years minimum and I can never stop myself tinkering with my vehicles.

So many decisions and considering I haven't test driven any of the above cars all I have to go on at the moment is what I have read. Test drives are to be done but I have to find places with these cars on the forecourt first. So what do you all think? I know its not easy but try to be as unbiased as possible and share what experiences you have had in each car. It would be great if you had driven 2 or 3 of my list as it would be easier for you to compare.

Cheers
Paul

the milage on the bmw's shouldnt be a problem tbh.
330ci sport would be lovely, not sure on how many are in your price range tho (facelifts rather than pre facelift).
plenty of 330 owners on here who can persuade you :D

The motoring press in general seem to really rate the Megane R26 F1.

I however think you'll struggle to find one for 10K, or a Civic Type R 04 onwards for that matter. I ended up going for an 04 Clio 182, for the same money the best i could do was as 51/02 Civic Type R.

Not really much you can do performance wise, but they come with 231bhp and fantastic handling out of the box, 0-60 in 5.9s, good for 155mph. Will be the most luxurious out of the list. Mileage is not an issue on these. My 330d is on 122k miles - I've taken it on various track days and use it as my daily driver.

A remap should take it up to around 250bhp, but that's where the mods stop. Anything more and you'd need a supercharger.

e36 M3 would be nice, but getting a bit long in the tooth now. Evo models have Vanos issues which cost a fortune to fix. The M3 will also cost a fortune to run compared to the rest. I would love to own an e46 M3 next, but the costs have just about put me off.

5.9 seconds ?

Thanks for the info on the BMW Nick. I thought the 0-60 was a fraction over 6 seconds though its not too important as it's around about the same as the other cars I have on my list as well as the 0-100time. It would be interesting to see a comparison of 30-70 and 50-100 and such but I imagine they will all be about the same too.

A remap to 250hp doesnt sound too bad at all to be honest and I would expect it would have better throttle response with that too. Must say the BMW is looking more and more like the cat I should be focusing on.

So I have learnt there is a 330ci and 330ci sport. I am thinking I will want the sport version but what does this have that the other doesnt? I am thinking different bumpers and maybe different suspension? I have just done an insurance quote on directline and it comes in on par with the hot hatches at £550 with a £250excess which is sounding good too.

You basically said about the M3 what I have been thinking so that one is off of the list.

So any other people think any of the other cars would be better than the BMW?

I'd say you're definitely on the right track with the 330ci, maybe consider a 330i if you want some more practicality.

As for the normal vs sport issue, there are the external differences which are obvious, nicer wheels, nicer interior trim and better suspension. I'd pick a sport everytime.

What is the difference between the 330i and 330ci? Is it one is 2door and one is 4door?

I prefer the looks of the 2door and at the moment there is only myself and my g/f and we are only 1.5years into our relationship so there are no kids planned for anytime soon so rear doors aren't a major thing just now. The other thing is I do have a g/f and although it will be my car I'm asking her for her opinion, but only on what she likes the look of. She hates Integras with a passion for some reason, I don't get it as I think they look really good, especially the DC5. She doesn't mind the BMW but doesn't like it in Black which I quite do so it is going to become a little interesting.

What Richyfingers said does play on my mind though. I can get something like a DC2 for a little less and have some money left over.

thanks for all the info guys.

evil plan

Well you could get the DC2 but just not tell her then with some of the money left over take her away for a fancy weekend and spoil her. Then when you get back ‘surprise’ her with your new car, she can’t give you a mouthful after wining and dinning her all weekend :D

/evil plan

I get mixed reactions from girls with the teg, some absolutely love it while others seem quite indifferent about it, one thing is for sure though when they find out it has no mirror in the passenger sun visor it looses a fair few points. Women eh?

I've got the 225Bhp LCR and its great. Fast and pretty comfortable with 5 door hatchback practicality.

Easy to map to 250-260BHP with a stage one remap (£400-500) and stage 2 will get you to around 270Bhp (add FMIC and 4bar FPR and 3inch downpipe). If you want to go really wild then there are several people who have gone big turbo and are seeing 350-380Bhp :o

www.seatcupra.net will give you all you need to know. ;)

Paradigm has a remapped one so talk to him about performance.

£10K should get you a mint 53 plate and change for a remap

Fox I have noticed the price thing whilst looking this lunch time on autotrader. I saw a few 330ci Sports for around the £10,000 mark and must say I think it is going to have to be one of these ones. The saloon and touring don't look as pleasing to my eye unfortunately.

I am trying to purchase this car without the need for getting a small loan etc but if need arises and a car pops up for £11-£12k then a small loan could be obtained pretty easily.

So 330ci Sport. Have there ever been any recalls or anything that is a common and known problem on them?

I see some of you mention facelift models. What year was the facelift model released and what are the differences?

The facelift was late 2003 for the Coupe and late 2001 for the Saloon and was mostly cosmetic with new front and rear lights/front wings, but in 2003 the 3 litres got a 6 speed box.

sub £10k is the absolute bottom of the 330Ci Sport market and it will be hard work to find a properly nice one for this sort of money. A well looked after, 1 owner from new car will easily do 100k and still feel as it did on 10k. Unfortunately, a 6 thrashed owners from new example, and the 330Ci's tend to be driven hard, might be problematic.

There are no major common problems but do be aware that they are not cheap to run. A set of tyres will set you back £600, for example.

Other way around ;)

To echo what Fox said, try to get a 1 owner car with sub 100k miles. It's worth spending the extra now, as you'll get it when you come to sell it.

I'd go for the saloon as it's great VFM, but I can understand the allure of the coupe.

A couple worth looking at:

Thanks Fox and Commited that info is useful to know. It's highly unlikely I will be able to stretch to a facelift model. As for the 330ci's being driven hard. I'm sure the BMW is more than capable of this as long as it has been serviced on time and properly. No one can drive flat out everywhere they go in the UK and I wouldn't think the BMW I buy has been driven any harder than my Pug306 gti6.

I agree that I should be looking for a sub 100k car (was aiming between 70-90k miles) and a FSH with as few owners as possible. As said I can stretch a little higher than £10k if I have to tho it would be nice to not have to. This is something that makes me think maybe one of the other cars in my list would be a better buy. Then I start thinking about depreciation etc though and would hope the BMW would hold its value a little better. £600 for a set of tyres is ok. Current car is half of that and I have to change them once a year so it will only cost me an extra £300 on top and as I say I waste £600 a year keeping the bike on the road. How many miles do people get out of their tyres? I will only be doing about 8000miles per year, if that as I recently moved so I am only about 5miles from work so I generally cycle unless the weather is really bad. The car will just be used for the weekly shopping trip and going out at the weekends.

I can see that the saloon is better VFM however it just doesn't have as much of an aggressive look as the coupe. I am only just about to put my bike on to the market so have plenty of time still to look around for cars. To be honest I might struggle to sell the bike with summer coming to a close now, but hopefully someone somewhere will want my Honda SP-2.

Oh why is one of those cars on pistonheads an M54? what does that mean?
