Hey.

My housemate is thinking of learning to drive and is just working out his money.

How much do they cost per lesson nowadays roughly, specifically in the North East of England?

I'm getting lessons around Sunderland and Washington. Was with BSM first and it worked out £16 an hour for the first 6. Then went with another place where I paid £70 for 5 so £14 an hour. Now with a different bloke who does 10 hours for £150. Basically somewhere around £15 or less with a bulk order is what he should be looking at.

Oh and don't change your instructors like I did, my progress is paying for that now. First a Corsa with 2k on the clock (1.2 petrol), then a Clio with 140k (1.2 petrol) to a Fiesta with 7k that's a diesel. Really screws up all your biting points, getting used to the feel of the car, all the reference points for manouveres. Plus different instructors have teaching methods and even say different things at times. I didn't even have a reason for changing my last instructor (with BSM it was simply the fact that they want too much moneys) regretting it now.

I quoted £15, so not too far off then.

He is probably going to buy a bulk set of lessons so he will get it a bit cheaper that way.

Noo!!

Dont do this buy in adv thing until you've had a few lessons what happens it you buy 10 lessons and end up not getting along with the guy £150~ down the drain!

But it will make you a better driver being able to drive multiple cars

:)

Don't worry, I'm fixing my housemate up with a friend of mine who is an ex Traffic Cop and a really really nice guy.

If he has problems with him then there is something wrong with my housemate ..... actually, now that I think about it :p

P.S.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

My lessons were £20 p/h and that was in a ford focus 1.8 turbo diesel, with 70 odd k on the clock. Was a crap car as well, kept breaking so id have a hire car for a few weeks then back to the old one. It even managed to break a day before i took my first test so i had to take my test in an astra :(, failed as well.

Paid a tad under £20, like £19.50 or something. Had ******* loads as well, instructor took me for a right ride but passed first time in the end so can't moan too much.

mine were £13 an hour that was ome years ago, my brother pays 16 in guisborough

We live in Middlesbrough, in the town centre, so only a stones throw from Guisborough. :)

All ... Any idea how many lessons he will need? Is there such a thing as an average in relation to this?

Many moons ago, I think I took somewhere between 10 and 15 lessons, but the test proceedure has changed somewhat since then.

Didn't realise they ranged in price sooo much around the UK.. In Bristol you'd be looking at around £20 + average, maybe £18 if you really shop around and buy in bulk. But the likes of BSM and AA want £24/26!

Number of lessons wise, it really depends on your friend. Just get the instructor to roughly estimate a sensible amount or go in their with a figure and ask the instructor whether its possible/what he thinks.

Obviously, either that you you were'nt as good as you thought.........

As for the cost of lessons, the best bet is to remember that some instructors are cheap for a reason and their quality of instruction is not usually it!

Best advice is to get some personal reccomendations, go for a few lessons to see if you get on with the instructor in question and are happy with them and then get a block booking.

Remember they are teaching you to drive, not pass a test. There is a difference.

How cheap?!! I had lessons last year and they cost £23 per hour - and that was only because I block booked 12 lessons a go. Otherwise the going rate around here (Oxford) is at least £25 per hour!

I added it all up when I passed. License, theory test, lessons and two tests = just a smiggin' over £1k

Cheap at twice the price if you can drive safely and not kill yourself/friends etc.

Think about it, people will happily pay thousands for insurance, the car and its maintenance etc but find £1K to £2K to be able to drive said car safely for hopefully 50 years plus a lot of money??
