Not used my mobile for like 5 months because i make all my calls with my work mobile now, so i rang up o2 to cancel.

They offered me a free contract, basically i pay nothing to them and they keep my current contract running for another year with 125 xnet mins. No new phone however.

Seems they are getting pretty desperate if they are prepared to accept nothing for another year just to keep a customer!

I'm planning to just sit the phone in a draw for another year then haggle a better deal if i need a phone around the time

it seems its best to keep a non paying customer than to let the customer go to a rival company in this case.

they probably hope you spend monies in other areas besides the line rental, like internet , or roaming fees etc.

don't just leave it in draw , give it to one of your family to use or a mate .

o2 did the same with my mothers contract. 750mins off-peak however.

When we rang 3g to cancel our 2 contracts they offered us 750 anytime any network for both sims + 100/150 txts. We just have to pay £7.50 at the end of the 12mnth contract, for each sim.

We accepted obviously

for my next contract i'm thinking of buying a sim-free phone and wonder if i can somehow get something similar

The two o2 sims were sim-only contracts. The contracts were going to expire so they offered us the 750 off peak deal. 12 mnth contract, £0 p/m.

The two 3g sims contracts were sim-only too, and were also up for expiry but they offered us a much better deals than o2 did 12mnth contract,750 any time/network, and 100~ txts per month.
