G92 / G98 - what will happen to prices?

I'm considering an upgrade to a 8800GTX or an Ultra - but I'm holding off for a bit, as I'm keeping an eye on developments on new cards. There seems to be massively conflicting news regarding what's happening with the new Nvidia G92 + G98 - i.e. whether it's a refresh or a mid/low-range card. Regardless of what happens, what is likely to happen to pricing across current products? Will the GTX and ultra drop in price?

what was that card from nvidia coming out in november that was gonna be the best card out then i thought it was called 9800gtx:confused:

That was just speculation as we all believed it to be the 8800's successor as I'm sure Nvidia made a statement that they would release a new top end card every 12 months. Now I don't know if that's actually true.

GTX and Ultra have no reason to drop in price so I severely doubt it.

They are gonna be the fastest cards for this year.

As Jihad has said. These are the top cards out from last year and still nothing beats them so there's no need for Nvidia to release a new card right now. This way they can start production on newer models whilst R&D research new technology and new ways to rot our eyes.

Basically they can work on the new cards whilst AMD/ATI try to beat or at least level with the GTX/Ultra. When ATI/AMD do, then Nvidia should be miles ahead in preparation for the next cards.

Unless ATI pull of a stunner and beat / match whatever Nvidia has planned, which I'm guessing is their target since they know if they release an Ultra competitor then Nvidia will just blow them away with something that will beat both.

Never got why the new series was dubbed the 9 series, was this an official statement saying it's 9 series for the new stuff. Even more so with the new card being a 8700, therefore I'd expect that the newer high end cards would follow suit and be 8900 / 8950. But it's kinda odd being new tech, you'd have thought being that they would have started a new 9 series, which I guess could be where everyone got the 9 series from.

Has there been an official statement from Nvidia regarding the November launches?. I bet there are still plenty who will be holding off from buying a GTX/Ultra, until they hear it officially (ie, no GTX replacement till next year)

If the new ATI Radeon cards are based on the same chipset design/architecture as the new FireGL range of cards the next product from ATI could be VERY special indeed.. ;)

I don't think they will announce it officially until it's within 1 month / 3 weeks of release, because if they announced that GTX/Ultra are getting replaced in January then they will loose a lot of money through people holding out buying a GTX/Ultra until January, and may even lose money to ATi from people buying a x1950 as a stop-gap until Nvidias new high end line are out. The best you'll probably hear is from website news reporting places and their "sources".

Not much will happen to prices, the current high-end cards will still rule supreme.
What we should have though is a very competetive mid-end card, which doesn't exist right now to be honest. No high-end card will come out in November either.

GTX has already dropped a bit in recent months (and maybe the ultra too, haven't really checked).

There isn't really much need for a price cut because GTX has no competition and still seems to be selling fairly well. I've even seen people replacing their 2900/GTS with one.

We can only hope. Competition is great for the consumer :D.
