I'd like to know what you guys think about the following car:

Ford Focus 53 Plate, from a Ford Dealer about 80 miles out. It has only had 2 owners from new and has the following spec:

ABS, Adjustable Steering Column, Air Conditioning, CD Player, Cup Holder, Airbag - Driver, Electric Door Mirrors, Front Fog Lights, Heated Front Screen, Heated Mirrors, Immobiliser, Metallic Paint, Airbag - Passenger, Power Steering, Rear Washer/Wiper, Remote Central Locking, Space Saver Spare Wheel, Sport Suspension, Radio, Electric Windows - Front, Height Adjustable Driver Seat, Leather Steering Wheel, Isofix Child Seat Anchor Points, Fold down rear seats, Individual Rear Seats, Deadlocks, Door courtesy lights, Front Headrests, Map reading lamps, Rear Headrests, Remote Audio Controls, Seatbelt Pre-Tensioners, Split Rear Seats

Mileage: 98k
Price: £4k

It has the climate pack and it's from a ford dealer, I think it's a pretty good deal. What do you guys think?

They asked me to let them know so they can get the car sent to them as it isn't at their site atm.

my mate put a deposit down on a focus 52 reg, 1.6 58k on the click, with AC, chair airbags, Traction control, (its a spanish car with ful UK history froma car supermarket type place)

£4100 not bad

Right just an update.

He said it has FSH and the car comes with a 3 months warranty. I asked him if he was open to a cash offer and he said "I'll be honest with you, the car is due for a cambelt change at 100k. He said at asking price he would replace that, get M.O.T done and any other appropriate work".

Decisions . . decisions!

Any input from any focus owners?

So it must be due its 100k mile service very very soon then... I would definately insist on having the cambelt / service done for that asking price. The second hand trader market is such a mine-field :(

A cambelt change on that car, if it includes tensioners, is worth £250ish, if it doesn't include tensioners, is worth £140ish. MOT is no bonus, I would EXPECT any car sold by a dealer to have one as a matter of course.

Still haven't give your opinion Mr Fox :p

If it includes both the cambelt and tensioners?

Better focus's out there for the price. I sold my 2000 1.8 Zetec with the climate and traction packs for £2500, 78k on the clock.

But this is 3 years newer from a dealer, you really can't compare the two.

Personally i don't know if i would be happy getting the dealer to do the cambelt change, i would ask for the money off instead and get it done myself.

I guess the questions are

1 - Do you really want to buy from a dealer or need to buy from a dealer?
2 - Are you interested in any form of warranty?
3 - Do you want a facelift car or better spec'd older car.

As has been said there are plenty around.

For a 100k car you deffo want a brand spanking new MOT & full 100k service.

We had a 100k 51 plate diesel at work (and I've driven a focus for the last 6 odd years)

Only issues have been wheel bearings & issues with central locking.

Other than that they have been really good. I would guess you would want to check when the discs/pads were last changed and that basic stuff like decent tyres (being obvious here). Has it got a full bundle of bills etc (always helps).

There is no telling whether its had a harder life at 53plate 100k than a 2000 (X) at 40k. For me it depends if it feels tired or not. My car is 7 years old and has done 33k miles and still feels tight as as new as when I got it. The 100k diesel felt tired inside (saggy seats etc).

You should in theory though have a heck of a lot of choice isn't like they only sold a couple of hundred is it :D

I agree with Panthro - my 02 plate 1.6 Focus cost me £5k from a dealer with 6 months warranty and only 20k miles.

Not an owner anymore, but I did have an 03 plate Focus Zetec with Climate and whilst it was a decent car, whenever it rained I got a nice puddle in the passenger footwell.

Took it back to the dealer 3 times before finally trading it in.

I was told it was a problem near the polen filter so it may be worth asking.

£4k for a moon-miles Focus? You can buy proper cars for £4k you know?!

Oh come on, its on 98k. We don't live in the 1980's anymore.

Name a 'proper' car he should get instead, then? Let me guess, an ancient poverty spec Volkswagen I imagine with 'low mileage' and only 200 coil pack replacements in the last 10 years of its low mileage life?
