I'm really suprised about the prices of the 8800 series of cards as the prices are still hanging on in there and haven't really fallen any over the last 6 or so month.

I recall dirty thoughts i was having about a Leadtek 8800 GTS 640mb card. It was £218 delivered from som cheap online place and here at OCUK they where about £225.

To my suprise I looked today and Ocuk have got them on at £234ish and they're out of stock.

Prices seam a bit daft to me,

To be honest, it makes a nice change to not feel robbed after a few months of use. My gfx card is only about £5 less now than when i bought it 5/6 months ago.

Nvidia posted in their forums that they believe their customers should support their lavish lifestyles when they retire with a luxurious pension fund. To that end Nvidia have ordered price increases of 10% on all current videocards, untill a large enough fund is formed (decideed by current upper level managers) to support all current top line managers on retirement with their current investment strategies. :p

Nvidia have no reason to drop their prices, they have no competition.

I certainly wouldent and anyone with a brain wouldent either. :)

To be fair though the HD2900XT does now offer reasonable competition for the GTS640 in some games.

One thing that has surprised me is how well the 640meg cards have sold, despite the fact that there's always been a hefty £50 premium over the 320meg version. In fact with GTX prices falling under £300 I can really see the squeeze being put on those cards. They've got a much more powerful card costing about £70 more, competition from ATI in their price bracket, and are being severely undercut by the GTS320.

So in that sense I kinda agree with the OP that the GTS640 price needs to drop to around the £200 mark. The GTS320 is sitting pretty at £170 because there is absolutely no competition whatsoever in that price bracket.

HI there

No price moves from NVIDIA for sometime. Any price drops are at the Etailors or VGA partners discretion.

OcUK has just put a very nice price on our own brand 8800 GTX on This Week Only. :)

£291 for the 8800GTX and £79 for the 512mb X1950 Pro 512mb ;), Sorted!.

The thing is. If one eretailer got a good reputation for being a bit cheaper they would sell far more then other shops because people that buy these cards know about other shops. There are some which are doing this and they are always out of stock and selling far better even though they are only 10 quid cheaper.

There is a good price on the OCUK one yes but its only on the OCUK one and isn't pernament...

Id remove that competitor pricing as its not allowed, and as above, no need for Nvidia to drop the 8800 prices as they are the top cards, they have no competition, and no new cards are coming to take over from them for a good while yet, so if you want the top cards, you have to pay for nvidia ones, as they are the only ones you can get, so they aint gona drop the prices if you have to buy them anyway.

It's an unusual situation when graphics cards hold the best part of their value for nearly a year.

Generally prices start to move when a new generation/flagship raises the bar.

I didn't state any places or prices. I just said they arnt the cheapest. Which everyone would know anyway tbh lol.

Competition or not you missed my point. A site with a 10pound drop on things like graphics cards sells far more then a site with high prices ones. They would make up the 10 quid they loss on each easily. At the moment you can look at pritty much any shop and they are all only varing by 2 or 3 quid (with a few exceptions)
