Ramadan - We've been asked not to eat at our desks...

But, in my new religion that I have just made up, it is my obligation to have a breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, brunch, lunch, afternoon break, tea, diner and supper. Plus during month's with a vowel in their name I have to have at least two random snacks throughut the day in addition to the above holy meals. It will be impossible for me to fulfill my religious duties without eating at my desk. :D

I...MUST....STOP....LAUGHING :D:D

i am fasting at the moment, and the people around my desk are still drinking tea, coffee, sandwiches etc.

what kind of muslim is it thats affected by this? i want to fast, its not something i feel has been forced on me, so people eating around me have no affect really. in fact the guy opposite me asked my for a recipe for roast leg of lamb yesterday (while i was fasting) and i gave him the recipe no problem. talking about food/drink and seeing it are part of the process of going through ramadan, i mean think about all the bleedin' takeaways still serving food run by musilms?!?!

i would suggest you discuss this with your nearest fasting muslim and ask him if its a problem, i would be amazed and horried tbh if he said it was!!

go munch :D

It hasn't got anything to do with being polite. It's about disregarding a stupid policy, so it doesn't become contractual. I bet none of the muslims even mind if you eat at your desk. It's just some pc brigade management making awful decisions. Once you start letting things like this stand, where does it end?
apathy should be banned.

Sigh...

Instead of getting into a argument with his boss about something that really quite trivial in the bigger scheme of things. He should save his argument for a bigger issue like pay raise or something that will effect his day actual job and in doing so, giving that much more wieght becuase he's not likely to whine about trivial inctances like above.

Second thoughts, do as everyone says here. Make a right **** of yourself and reap the benefits.

FFS... this is hippy's making life crap for everyone.

I had a muslim friend that used to come with me to get food and sit and talk to me whilst I ate - when he was fasting. He said the pillars of Islam weren't supposed to be easy.

No its called smart working life. Those that get ahead and those who don't.

Hardly trivial and it doesn't have to be a whinge. You can be perfectly professional and question why this is happening.

Are there any muslims where you work that you can have a word with about this?

It reads to me like a polite and simple request and not something you have to do. Not really an infringement of your human rights though is it or really going to cause any real upheavle.

It basically comes down to whether you want to be polite and do someone else a favour or not.

Yupp.

But trust the usual people to come out with their middle-ages village mentality and propose nonsense ideas and spout nonsense offensive **** which they would never dream of doing IRL

That’s the way employer’s like to word it, when they "request" what they really mean is "do"

Go find the thread about people eating smelly foods in the office, get a few ideas from there and order yourself a nice chicken Tikka to smell out the office.

TBH, this is unfair. Kick up a fuss... email the daily Mail - it will be frontpage if you mention that your boss wears a veil too.

Bah, you stole my joke and re-tinned it with extra words.. :(

If its an issue for you I would simply email the people that it would directly effect ie. those in your section, those within a close radius to your desk etc. stating that you would prefer to continue having your lunch at your desk and that unless you are asked otherwise you will continue to do so.

Just giving my opinion on what will be better for him in the long term. No need to get personal.

No. This is an example of some do-gooder coming up with a stupid idea and those that have an issue with it just rolling over and moaning on the internet. If you don't like it, challenge it.
Umm... I probably will challenge it, but like I said, I dont want to kick up a fuss, there is a difference

Oh, and I'm not "moaning", I'm probing to see what people in general's opinion would be on it, and it seems to me that most people share the same opinion.

Oh and this guy isn't exactly the kind of person you can sit down and have a quiet and calm chat with. It's as if he's constantly on coccaine if you know what I mean :p

I'm going to have a quiet word with my boss as me and a few colleagues feel the same way, and we'll see what he says. If the boss shares his views though, then there won't be much we can do

P.S. He's already had a go at me for eating my breakfast at my desk... while nobody was around!!

P.P.S. He is not muslim, though he is Asian and tends to play the race card a LOT. Though most of the time he tries to pass it off as not-serious, but I know what he really thinks.

Pffft - My MD is muslim and there are only 3 in the company. He is fasting but has no problem with us eating in the office. In fact I am munching on a ham sandwich as we speak! He even has lot of the local comunity round here every Friday for prayer. It is their personal decision to fast and should not affect anyone else.

Bit of a silly request really, like has been said before the Muslim staff probably weren't even asked so it's not their fault. Just another case of a do gooder with no idea not wanting to offend anyone.

Next year say you're giving up something up for lent and request that nobody in your office eats what you have chosen to give up :)
