My Xbox 360 is Dead - FAQ

Oh well repair process underway & shipping labels all printed :)

Would it be sad to buy a core to keep me in the game so to speak? :(

If you buy a 2nd hand one you could probably sell it on at a similar price to what you bought it at

But personally I wouldn't bother :p

My console got the 3 red lights just sitting at the dash. I restarted it and then it did it again, phoned ms to get the labels and stuff, then unplugged all the cables and hard drives and its been on for pretty much the whole day and no problems. Should I go ahead and send it and risk missing the halo 3 launch or should i just keep it and hope it last a while longer, that way ill be able to play stranglehold.

When you say that you unplugged everything, did you plug it all back in to play after (including the HDD)? If by unplugging the HDD made the difference then it would mean a dead HDD. If not, then if you had the 3 rings on the dashboard then I would guess that any big game would knock the 360 over for sure. Better to try and send it off asap unless you want to wait the few weeks to find out if it is semi stable for Halo 3.

My launch was killed by Catan :D

One other thing to note, I have had the three red light thing while using one of those Nyko intercoolers on the back. As soon as I took the intercooler off, my 360 worked fine again, I think its just the intercooler affecting the power cable connectivity.

Edit: One thing I just remembered I need to ask, my 360 has had a couple of framerate drops recently in Bioshock. This has only started happening the last couple of days, and is only really noticeable on Bioshock, though does also happen in heavy bits on other games. Is this a sign my 360 is dying? I will not be happy if it dies having just started playing Halo 3!!

Any high stress game or game where you'll be playing a lot more time on your Xbox 360 will undoubtedly show up any problems. You're pretty much waiting for a ticking time bomb if you've had the three red lights as it means something is fundamentally not right with your Xbox.

Turnaround time is about 3 weeks at the minute (mine is supposedly out for delivery today) so it's up to you whether you want to send it back or risk it dying permanently.

Found this today on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGEAIfPAG6Y

I am sorry to say thats exactly what happened to mine and a day or two later i got the three red lights.

It happened to me but took about a month of freezing and lockups before dum dum dum...well you know. Its only a matter of time now!

Got my replacement today as well - Benq drive. Haven't looked at manufacture date or to see if the new heatsink is in it, been playing Bioshock finally :D

On the repair sheet it just said the motherboard had been changed.

Annoyingly I've had to reinstall the HD-DVD player (which took me ages to find the CD for) and also set up all my network settings again which of course I've forgotten.

Just had a replacement 360 today for my bro's and its the HDMI variant, does the HDMI verrsion have the small CPU's with the fixed heatsink ?

Well off the phone from xbox support.

Rough Convo

me "Recieved brand new console from repaired, and its scratched bioshock game which is brand new out the box"

Foreign script reader "Sir! the xbox 360 does not scratch discs without it being moved. Do you have a small child!"

me "Well ive tried another game and its starting to do the same"

Foreign script reader "One moment please i must consult my supervisor!"

Cue 4mins of that crappy music

Foreign script reader "Ok sir unfortunatly you have to send it back for repair"

me "what about the discs"

Foreign script reader "if its a microsoft game studio you can get it replaced"

But not until you recieve the console back from repair! so looks like ill get halo 3 maybe

A good warning if you recieve/buy an xbox 360 test it out using a microsoft game. (crackdown, halos gears of war ). My bioshock disc wont be replaced as its 2K published.

for reference the drive was a Hitachi drive!

Just got mine back to 2 weeks today since I sent it off, same console it seems but no note to say what has been done, they have managed to put a small crack in my face plate though

Now lets see how long it lasts, unless I decide to trade it in for an elite before it dies again. :)
