After looking at Focuses, Astras and Leons around the £3k mark, I bought myself a 1999 Honda Civic 1.4 Sport on 62k miles a couple of weeks ago - first car of my own. It was advertised for £2.5K but got it for £2.1K as tax was expiring and hadn't had a service for 15k miles!! But that got done today, with only rear bushes to be changed. So in total, it has cost £2.4k to get it sorted - by no means a bargain but very decent car and very under budget.

It is not that amazing cosmetically - the chap had had a dog, so its hairs required a lot of elbow grease and duct tape to get rid of and the outside has very fine scratches and marks. I suppose that is to be expected from a 7 year old car.

Insurance cost me £600 with no 23, NCB and good postcode which was higher than the £550 I was quoted on for the other cars but I read that Hondas do have higher insurance generally.

My wifes got the same but hers is on a W plate and is black. Nice car to toodle around in. That reminds me I have to get a replacement rear wiper motor as the current one has been de-toothed, any ideas of an el-cheapo place to pick 1 up?

No Vtec y0! :( But yes, it has quite a lot inside - ac, electric mirrors, half leather, cd, etc It will be good for at least a couple of years until I build up the NCB and get something newer and a bit more oomph. I think the 1.4s has 90bhp.

In fact, I looked at an HRV with 1.6 Vtec which was exceptionally good but it was £4k. There is something attractive about the higher seating position and being able to see a lot more around you.

My inlaws have a 98 1.5 vtec, and it's so stupidly solid it's unbelievable. Really nice quality, especially when compared to my EP3.

Totally bomb proof too. Nice one ;)

Nice car mate.I have a Honda Civic as my first car. The dude selling it to me is driving it down from Lancaster to my house in Greater London on the 22nd September.Bad thing is I'm going Uni on the 22nd as well so leaving early!:(

My one is a 98 1.5 Vtec in Green. Are you doing anything mod wise for this car or are you just keeping it as it is?

Positive comments - I like. I don't plan on doing anything to it although I have put a couple of Civic forums in my favs to read up on what can be done.

Very nice first car there mate :). I was looking at Hondas myself, but the Honda Accord in black. The thing that put me off is how big the thing is, i think id be better off with something chuckable for my first car. The get the Accord in a years time when i have a bit more experience on the road.

My only negative one is that you should have got the rover version, much cheaper to insure! :)

Looks good mate, very clean. Uber reliable and the 1.4i isn't bad for it's literage.

However, not to poo in your teacup, but thats pretty pricey though isn't it? £2k will get you a VTI!

Also, £600 for insurance?

I'm 23 yr with 4 years no claims and I insure the VTI-S with all mods declared with like for like replacement for £450!

Still as long as you are happy - thats the main thing ;)

Enjoy!

Just noticed the typo in my original post. I have 0 ncb as I have always been a named driver over the last 5 years.

Well, I wouldn't say it was pricey but it wasn't a bargain either. Apart from missing a service - which I did straightaway and only needed bushes replaced - it was in decent condition and considering I was going to go for a Focus/Leon/Astra over my budget of £3k, it was still reasonable for me. Still fell in the price bracket according to What Car and Parkers, albeit the top end. And there was the convenience of the car being only 5 miles from me.

It's running well so far, although I find getting into reverse gear a bit tough sometimes. Oddly, my brother says he also found this with his driving instructor's similar civic. I might look into it.

Is that Rover 45? Well, despite guessing they were similar, reading online led me to think they were not as reliable as Hondas. And there was the Honda brand and reliability reputation. Didn't consider insurance cost for a Rover.
