What benefits does Ultimate give over Home for a basic user that likes to basically just play games? doesnt look like much to me that will affect me.. any info?

If you only play games, then there is not much point in it. It doesn't have much over the Home Premium Edition as it is.

Dream Scene, few extra games (that texas poker one?) and features, that's about it I believe.

If you were considering Ultimate then I'd put a little bit towards it and go Retail Upgrade to Home Premium instead.
You won't lose much and with a Retail version you'll never have to worry about licensing issues with regards hardware upgrades for the life of the OS.

if you don't know what the differences mean, then stick with home basic

premium will give you the aero graphics effects on the desktop, and will give you the media centre application

apart from that, there's not much difference

Not sure of the exact difference, but one reason I wish I purchased Ultimate is for the Remote Desktop feature. I was often connecting to my home PC from work. Now this is only possible with 3rd party software (logmein).

A second reason would be that of Media Center. I only mention this as I'm about to become an Xbox 360 owner and I'm looking forward to setting up streaming from my PC.

I currently have Vista Prem and Vista Enterprise spread throught 3 PC's

home premium comes with media center. and remote desktop can be made to work on any vista version by replacing a single dll file. :p

Yeah bad typing on my part. Media cent was the reason I got the premium version when I already had the Enterprise edition.

Never knew about the dll replacement allowing remote desktop. Thanks
