Anyone put a 7200RPM drive in their MacBook (not Pro) ?

I'm going to upgrade the drive in my MacBook and the outstanding (performance wise) 2.5" SATA drive at this time is obviously the 200GB 7200RPM Hitachi 7K200. I'm wondering about the effect of the potentially extra heat in the MacBook chassis though.. battery life is not so much of a concern. Is anyone here running a 7200RPM drive in their MacBook, or even better, this model in particular ? What are your thoughts ?

cheers :)

I wouldn't think the extra heat of the 7200rpm is going to be a problem to be honest.

After all, you could always shove the 200GB in and monitor temps.. :)

I'm running a Hitachi 7K200 in my MacBook. I was going to get one of the Seagate 7200.2 drives but I'm glad I waited. It's impressive that Hitachi were able to stomp what were already really fast drives! The 100GB and 200GB models are the fastest because they have the highest data density per platter.

Very easy to install as long as you have the correct screwdrivers (a very small Philips to access the drive bay and a TORX (T8?) to take the metal jacket off the old drive and put it on to the new one)

Can you notice the difference between the 5400 (i think) drive and the 7200 drive?

Yeah. It is quite noticeable, but not night and day.

A good excuse to upgrade is that you can whack the old drive in a 2.5" caddy and have a nice portable drive :p

I can't comment on a MacBook, but on the MacBook Pro the difference is noticable :)

Reckon i might upgrade my MBP drive before installing Leopard. Do you have a link to a guide you used EVH? How difficult would you say it was to do?

Just updated it for you.. sorry, wasn't concentrating.

It's an easy process if you've handled building PCs before

Rather than starting a new thread I wondered if I might be able to tag onto this one.

If I wanted to replace the 500GB 5400 RPM drive that's currently inside my 17" MBP with a smaller, faster drive; what's the one to go for?

Is the 320GB WD Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT still the pick of the bunch?

And what's the best caddy to put the 500GB drive in? Or are they all much of a muchness?
