PhysX back from the Brink?

Hate to admit it but that HP look awesome - appeals to all my bling-fetishes in one easy step - I'm scared to see how expencive a fully spec'd up one would cost though. Is that not the same ppu as the original one in the HP? Branching out with Dell, I think, is an excellent idea, if only to get their name out there - create the market by brute force :D

Point of the matter is. With Dell you dont truely know what your getting.

2GB of ddr2 ram... which moddle? I could get 2gb of ddr2 ram for under 40 quid. What makes you think its good? If it was they would say what it is like they do in alienware (pitty they are butt ugly!).

You wont be able to overclock the ram on a dell motherboard either and you dont even know if the hds are fast or not.

They are cheap for a reason and that reason is why i say once you go past the low end budget pcs they start becoming rip offs.

How is any of that relevant to the Dell Laptops or PhysX cards they are going to offer in the upcoming m1730??

People who build there own PC tend to want something different from there machine. If you want a reliable machine to run a bit of email/web browsing maybe Office then the Dells are good machines. If that is all that you want do you really care what brand of graphics / chipset / hard drive or memory is in it. No you don't, it works and it's quiet and its cheap. It does the job that you buy it for.

Having said that most people on these forums tend not be using there PC for this purpose and tend to forget that people using there PC as a tool vastly outnumber the people that play with there PC. There have been threads on this site regarding firmware revisions on hard disk, what week revision of CPU core etc which for the vast majority of people in front of computers is completely irrevelant.

However back to the original thread point. Having a volume PC manufacturer make the physx chip available is a good step by Ageia to getting developers to use the SDK and make the the physx chip a success. Developers will develop for what is out there and selling.

Well... its not lol, i was refering to the dell comments... um... they went off topic first? lol.

I think it would be good if physics cards achualy became usefull. You never know it could lead to a drop in price to try and push them further. I mean well, none of the dell pcs are really going to be running games like Graw2 anyway so they cant use them. Its just a ploy for dell to say to someone uneducated its got a physics card.

But you never know, games might make use of them. Doubt id buy one unless it was like 50/60 quid and i already had a few terrabytes worth of hard drives and 8gb of ram and some water cooling. So got a while to go :P

“physx = FAIL, not coming back, ever. dont care what the fanboys say.“
So Dell and HP have taken it aboard among others. overclockers.co.uk them self have even made there own brand up and started selling it. Yeah that does sound like it’s failing and not coming back.

Even my dated Laptop with its 'tired old' 7950GTX can happily demolish games like GRAW2 (PhysX aside - need the new card for that one!) In fact there is very little out there at the moment that isn't quite happy at the full 1900x1200 ish resolution with only minor tweaks and resolution reductions - as it happens, my laptop is my most powerful gaming machine ATM. The m1730 - mentioned in the OP - is due to have the new 8700GT (unsure of its performance, but I doubt it will be slower) - which will make it a formidable machine. Once the full 8800go becomes available I know I'll be upgrading mine and again - there'll be nothing out there to stress my little beast. You are seriously underestimating the power of some of the top end 'desktop replacements' out there now like the XPS and others!

(But for what it's worth you are half right - my XPS will never run GRAW 2 - just didn't like the original enough to buy the sequel ;) )

pottsey LOL, fancy seeing you in the ageaeaaa thread, it still fails, dont care what you say.

Your two last posts are pathetic and flamebait. Back something up like Pottsey does or is that too much of a challenge for you ?.

The reason yours runs it is because it has a decent graphics card. The majority of now days laptops seem to be stuck with 8600M Gts and they suck. They would never run graw 2 with a physics card and therefore its just a ploy to get money.

Dell's pcs are terible when you get to "top range".

my friend payed 900 quid for:

5000+ X2

1300XT

1GB of pc2-4200 ddr 2 ram.

2x 500mb hard drives

thats it... no sound card or anything. Very poor for 900 quid!

Errr when though? As of today

AMD dual 5600+
2 gig 667Mhx ddr2 ram
2 x 500Mb hard drives
8600Gt graphics card
On board 7.1 but for £11 you can have audigy or for £47 a x-fi extreme
22" monitor
keyboard,mouse vista etc

Total cost £804 inc vat and delivery

£681 without the monitor

Or try this one:

Intel® Viiv™ Core™ 2 Quad-Core Q6600 Processor
2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
640GB Serial ATA RAID 0 Stripe + 500Mb hard drive
SINGLE 768MB nVidia® GeForce® 8800 GTX
keyboard,mouse vista etc

£912 inc vat and delivery

I think he either got ripped off or we are talking about a year ago or more ;)

Thanks for clarifying - I was wondering why my laptop ran my games so well...;)

Again, this is a thread about Dell XPS laptops (specifically the upcoming m1730) which is coming with the option to include a version of the Ageia PhysX card. Good new for Ageia as it can't hurt their sales.

This particular Dell - the one the thread is about - will not come with an 8600GT, the minimum spec quoted so far is an 8700GT - a very different animal, and hopefully soon to be replaced by whatever version of the 8800 makes it to laptops. It will be more than capable of dealing with Graw 2, and the addition of the Ageia card will certainly help in some parts of that game.

In fact, not only will the Dell come with the PhysX option, but I found this as well:

The first juicy tidbit concerns the graphics chipset, which now looks like it will be two NVIDIA GeForce GO 8700M GTs coupled using SLI

Hardly slow. And again, more than capable of handling what's thrown at it.

I did have a giggle on the Dell site though, when choosing which processor you want to shell out for, they came out with this priceless classic:

Higher Processor speed significantly improves the performance of your system

Sweet! :o
