Just Bought new Octavia vRS - Have I got a good deal?

I just specced one up on Broadspeed.

A vRS with no options specified is £15910.

Selecting all the options you posted it came to £19079 OTR.

So not a brilliant deal really.

Only a good deal if you do a lot of miles and get 5+ services in the 3 year period.

Odd, I just selected a VRs TDi with the same options and got £19251, does it vary with postcode etc?

Anyway, that was not including the 3 years servicing, so I think the OP got a reasonable deal, not an excpetional deal but not a complete rip off either.

Everyne knows you don't buy new cars get one thats 6 months to a year old with less than 10k on the clock , you can pick them up for around 14k-15k which would save you 5k, thats a few nice holidays!.

How would you buy a secondhand car if no-one buys them new....

  • Business leasing is a big enough market
  • Car rental companies flood the market with 6 month old cars etc.
  • Car dealers usually buy a variety of brand new cars for their staff to use so that they have a steady stream of used cars.

But all those are new cars being bought, I didn't specificaly mention private sales. In any case, if you want a very specific set of options, then it could be very difficult to get a nearly new car. I personaly wouldn't buy a new car unless I had money to throw away, but some people obvioulsy feel the expense is justified and thats their prerogative.

could have got an RX8 for less than 20k easily.....i love mine :), Even brand new ones if you haggle enough you can get for just under the 20k mark

Could get an M3 for that money too!

Not the most relevant observation for someone buying a 50mpg car though.

To be honest, after recently driving an E60 BMW 530D I would have gone for one of those for that sort of money. £20k would have bought you an absolute minter.

I realise the new 5 isnt to everyones taste, but after driving one... I doubt you would want to go back to the Octy, despite them being very nice. They are just leagues apart, and I have driven both.

I've seen some of the alternative suggestions on here but none of them I would have considered. The main reason is that I'm a diesel convert so petrol is out of the question and I needed a family sized car anyway so an RX8 wouldn't be any use either! Insurance is also a big point so something like an M3 would be too expensive to insure (I'm only 26 this year!)

The comparison here is between NEW cars that you can buy for £20k specced up, not used cars. If you want to start discussing used cars that you can buy for the same money then we'll still be discussing it this time next month!

Personally I don't go for used cars unless they're ex-demonstrators from a dealer. Despite all the pros of saving money and the safety nets they have these days I still don't feel 100% confident buying used.

There's also a lot to be said for offsetting the cost of a new car on finance which you can't always do on used.

Some people prefer used and some prefer new cars, I'm the latter.

But tbh you could buy a 1 year old car and still have 2 year warranty, and sell it by the time the last year is up.

You could but it's not the point - it's still a used car isn't it? Unless it's an ex-works car that's been driven by the company boss or something.

what's the difference between a "used" car and an ex demo car from a dealer thats been ragged on mant different test drives?

You'll always get plenty of people who criticise you for buying a new car on here, I did when I bought the S3 and you couldn't get one 2nd hand without paying extra when I ordered mine.

The deal you got looks pretty reasonable, especially given that it's main dealer not broker and you've got what should be a hassle free trade in. The important thing is if you're happy with it, and as long as you are, and you're aware and happy with likely costs (depreciation etc) then it's all good.

At least you haven't got the finance/loan haters in here yet, the ones who cannot work out why you may not want to hand over a straight £20-30k in cash on a depreciating asset...

The difference is that demo cars are practically new with only a few thousand (no more than 5 or 6) miles on the clock for a significantly less amount of money but with full warranty. The car may have been ragged a few times but the car will be in tip top condition and won't have had any nasty accidents or prangs.

Put simply I don't trust used cars as there's always a reason for a car to be sold. Usually it's high mileage, age or a combination. Ex-demos are different in that they are practically new cars but cost less and come with all the perks of a new car - in my experience anyway.

So what's the reason behind you selling your fabia, it's neither old nor high mileage?

If you'd read any of my previous posts you'd see why I was selling it.

I just like to know where the car I'm buying has been and not find any nasty suprises later on. That can't be said of ex-demo cars but the backup and price difference is there to compensate.

For the record, the Octy is a very nice car, and im sure it will serve you well. I was just saying what I would have chosen.
Im not so hung up about the new/used car thing so the 5 series is what I would buy. If you want new, then fair enough, though *I* couldnt justify it having seen what 20k would buy me....

That's fair comment. As I keep saying, some people like myself prefer new cars and others prefer used cars.

Each to their own at the end of the day :)
