well hallo thar!!

some may remember my spec me a commuter bike post... well with it being winter coming up I've decided to do my CBT now, and then wait until Spring time to take on my DAS...

So next month I wanna do my CBT and get a CBR125 or something along those lines and ride that for a while for experience/etc....

So with that in mind - can anyone point me in the direction of some gear for bikering! any brands I should look for, etc... now I know you can spend a gajillion on bike wear so elts not go crazy - but I don't want shoddy carp that will be useless if the worst happens so a happy medium??

Fly my pretties fllylyyyyy!

yeh i noticed you can get a whole load of gear on ebay - was just after an idea on whats good and what to avoid!

so something like what you posted is fine?? what about gloves/helemts/boots/etc - anything to avoid?

You must get a helmet that fits and it must be new as they are a one impact device.

For helmets speak to the professional in a shop but AGV,Arai,Shoei are the good ones.

Gloves you will need 2 pairs one for wet weather one for dry , same goes with the boots.

I tried googling ""power ranger" motorcycle leathers", but you only get pages with leathers designed not to make you look like a power ranger. :(

cool thanks for that, I will prob go to a bike shop for a helmet so I can get a perfect fit - that would be annoying and likely dangerous if it didn't!

also this might be a silly question but:

What do you guys wear under your motorbike clothes?

do you have other trousers on? like normal jeans or whatever? Or just wear the bike trousers?

Helmet you have to go to a shop, you can then find one which fits and buy online, brand new only.
Make sure it's got a gold safety label, rather than sliver (I assume they still do this, quite possibly replaced with some Euro safety markings). A good fit should be snug and actually push your cheeks in and up. Gee a shop assistant to check for you.

Try and get a jacket with slide protectors and spine protector.

Trousers it depends. If you get leather ones, then just wear them, if you get something bigger and more fabric like, you can if you wish wear stuff underneath. That's what i used to do,

Thanks Acid I think that covers everything.. i will hit a shop when it's helmet time...

I'd want to get bigger trousers then as I'd want to wear the bike trousers over my jeans or something (on the way to work..) then just take the bike trousers off!

kk I'll keep my eye on eBay!

One other thing, don't forget gloves and boots.
Hands is the first thing you'll put out to save yourself and it gets wet/cold. Get 2 pairs if you can afford it, a summer pair and a waterproof padded warm winter pair. Pair of boots although you should wear proper bike boots, I always used to wear doc martins or something else with ankle support. Although they don't offer anywhere near as much protection.

Cheap cak.

I bought boots of ebay and they will be going straight back on the bay.. the ones i got are "waterproof" but there not.

For boots look for Alpinestar or Sidi.
http://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/hermes/shop/2,1,100 -- That shop seems good value.

Forget brand names, you need to be looking at the quality and fit of the clothing, just because it has alpinestars stamped on it and costs £600 doesn't mean you'll get either! Good quality boots and gloves are a must. I've found the sidi rain evo boots are a good compromise between protection, comfort and weather resistance. Gloves, look for doubling up of leather, triple stitching etc. Its good to get a pair that are a little tight at first, they'll stretch after a while. Helmet wise buy whatever fits best, there is no difference between them safety wise (well unless you count £30 chinese lids!) I believe the shoei raid 2 came top of a recent safety test, which is their 'budget helmet, though of course a £80 takachi might be the one for you.

I bought a set of ashman two piece leathers for £14 off ebay, they fit 'OK'. I'm taking them to a small place soon to get them altered. Bit too much material on the arse and I want a zip that connects the two all the way round. This is a pretty good way of getting a custom fitted set of leathers for not a lot of money. If you buy stuff off ebay or online to save money then try it on in a bike shop first.

If you buy kit that doesn't fit properly, you may as well ride in your undercrackers :)

Only advice i can give is if you can get a helmet made to fit your head. I got one made doesnt look much but is sooo comfortable!! Only about £120 iirc so not that bad

I usually wear an HJC helmet, vintage bike jacket (leather), trousers (leather), leather gloves in summer (waterproof Frank Thomas' in winter, although they were rubbish so need new ones) and a pair of Oxtar boots for summer/winter. If it rains, I put on some waterproof plastic things over my leathers. Easy peasy.
Underneath leathers, usually a t-shirt and maybe a jumper, and anything from jeans, shorts, work trousers or boxers under my leather trousers.

I have 2 sets of kit for different used.

1: Full Rev`it! leathers, two peice, fully armoured.
Wolf Kangaroo skin gloves (summer gloves)
Sidi Vertigo Corsa boots & HJC Helmet.

Generally used for normal rideing around in summer.

2: Textile jacket (Frank Thomas I think)
Draggin' Jeans
Rev'it! Quicksilver gloves (WP & thermal)
Sidi Vetigo Corsa`s (not very waterproof, but didnt cause me any problems during last winter) and HJC Helmet again.

General winter & commuting gear.
Also used for popping down the shops.

I generally wear a shirt and boxers under my leathers, nothing else.

I also have a waterproof over suit incase i get caught out in the rain in my leathers.

EDIT: Also, I use Harpers Race Shop for most of my kit unless I can find it cheaper elsewhere.
