Right...now I'm facing a dilemma! My 400D is starting to feel limited, and I have a student loan in the next couple of weeks....do I either:

a) buy a 30D for around £420 (or wait a few weeks in the hope the price will drop lower..) and maybe save a bit extra for a nice new lens

or

b) spend it all and buy a 40D?

Got a 100-400L which is on my camera 95% of the time so would be looking to get a 24-105L or something along those lines to replace the kit lens, so if I was to go for option a) what lens would you go to compliment it?

All for the price of a 40D...?
Cheers
Phil

What lenses do you have at the moment?

It's almost always better to go for more/better glass instead of a better body. Besides, glass won't lose 50% of it's value in 18months.

Got the Canon 100-400L IS so long range isnt a problem, got the 50mm 1.8 (which canon owner hasnt!) and the 18-55mm kit lens, so I do need something in the short range but not desperatly as I rarely use it at the moment!

If you want to do landscapes or architectural shots, you'd need a wide angle. I've got the Sigma 12-24 which is simply fantastic, but everyone rants about the Sigma 10-20 now. Similar with better filter options I suppose (not bitter that the 10-20 was announced 3 weeks after I bought the 12-24!)

had the same dilemma myself, in the end, is the live view and 3" screen and 2 megapixels worth the extra £300ish? i went for the 30D, i don't regret it, with the £300 i saved i got a 70-200 L lens

me :o

i'm saving for a sigma 30mm f1,4 instead. :)

Get the 50mm f/1.8, it's probably slightly better optically and certainly better value. The 30mm f/1.4 isn't bad by any standard, but I'd rather have a 50mm f/1.8 for ~£70 than a 30mm f/1.4 for £260 (and this is from someone who owns a 30mm f/1.4).
