Just Bought new Octavia vRS - Have I got a good deal?

Odd, I just selected a VRs TDi with the same options and got £19251, does it vary with postcode etc?

I came up with £19523 OTR when I spec'd it up.

Taking into account the 3 years servicing as long as you were happy with your trade in I think you've done well

The only thing you got wrong was getting it in silver instead of race blue :p

TBH I was torn between the race blue and the silver. I told the dealer I wanted it in race blue but he found a silver one with the options I wanted and a lot more besides.

When it came down to it, I decided that I'd rather have the options over the colour and the fact the majority of Octy vRS buyers go for the race blue, making it a common colour for that car. I think the silver gives it an air of class whilst still looking the business.

Personally it puts a smile on my face knowing I'll be driving around in one of the rarer colours seen on that car but then that's just me!

I've just done similar trading in my Octy 2.0TDi on a 2004 54 Plate for a new vRS Petrol. Due for delivery in next fortnight, hopefully.

Spec I've gone for is:

Dual-zone air-con, rear electric windows and jumbo box
18" 'Zenith' alloys
Both FOC with the current offer as stated

Front & Rear parking sensors
Xenon headlights & headlight washers
Auto dimming rear view mirror with rain sensor & light assistant
Metallic paint (Black)
Maxi-dot trip computer

3 Years Fixed 10K Miles Servicing again free if you get it on their Options type account 5.2% APR

As for your deal, yes it's fine as long as your happy with it. Posting on these forums will always find someone who could get a better deal, and plenty more I'm sure would get a worse one.

As for my deal I was very happy with mine costing me 7K to change, which after all is the important figure.

I'm afraid I have to agree with you. I suppose I ask for all I get asking this sort of question!

The cost to change I knew would be a massive jump going from the Fabia to the Octy so I was prepared for that. I actually only went over budget by £1k but then I got a much higher spec than I was expecting to get so I'm very happy.

I see you went for the stealthy black option!

That is a 530d Sport. £20k will NOT buy you an absolute minter of an E60 530d Sport. It will barely by you a thrashed potting shed of a 530d Sport.

The one in that advert looked pretty good actually, but in any case, that was just an example. You will definitely get a mint SE for £20k, which is the car I was referring to originally.

Edit: And for the record, it isnt a sport. Its an SE with the sport bumpers.

Just out of interest would your reaction still be the same if the OP spent 20k on a Seat, VW or Audi?

Seat, probably, VW or Audi less so. The biggest single problem that still plagues the two 'budget' brands of the VAG group is depreciation.

Thats a fair point. Which is the main reason I got my Octavia vRS for much less than a proper Golf GTi at 4.5 years old.

I must admit that I wouldn't buy a new Skoda for that reason. I think the depreciation is getting better but still worse than the other brands in the VAG range. If I was in the market for a new car at the time I probably would have made an exception in the case of the last of the mk1 Octavia vRS', They were knocking them out for about 13.5k brand new

i personaly would have never paid that for a skoda.
choice of car for the money 350Z

Depreciation is getting better I got £12K for my 3 Year Old Octy 2.0TDi with 50K on the Clock so can't complain, got less than that for my Ford in comparison many years ago when trading in for another Ford.

Had a quick look at the Audi A4 and for similar spec as the vRS youd be paying just over 30K.

Residuals are definitely getting better. I would expect to get around £12k back when I trade it in 3 years from now with about 35 - 40k on the clock. I wouldn't be complaining if that's what I got as that means the car will have retained around 60% of its original value which isn't bad to say the least.

I looked at the A4 but dismissed is straight away for 2 reasons. First is that it's a saloon car and I wanted a hatchback. Secondly like you say it would cost a fair bit more to spec it up to the Skoda's standard. I'm not up for paying a few more grand for what is essentially just a different badge!

Whilst I appreciate you are happy with your deal I must take issue at that particular comment. Despite platform sharing, the A4 is not a Skoda Octavia with a different badge. It is, effectively, a different product of noticeably higher quality.

should have got a black one

and whats the point of saying should have got a 350z instead?

I would have loved a 350z but then would have been able to transport my parents anywhere, couldnt have got a pram in the boot and could have taken all my fishing gear away for a weekend..totally different cars with totally different practicality and uses

entirely true my neighbour has a 2.0T a4 s-line and it is superb inside, feels lovely...but when you lift the bonnet the only difference I could spot was the badge on the plastic cover on the engine. I dotn know whether VAG assembles the engines and ships them out to whoever or if they are assembled on site in the respective factories..a lot of my visible parts are stamped/labelled exactly the same as his

given the choice (and my increased salary) I will be getting an A4 but my vRS will serve me well until then, it really is a superb all rounder

I'm not saying that the A4 shares the same platform as the Octavia, far from it in fact. The relative size of each car is similar, this is the point I was trying to get across. Obviously the quality of the Audi I would expect to be of a higher standard than the Octavia but then you're paying for that extra quality.

What I'm trying to say is that many of the parts that the Octavia is built from (including the engine which is the same in both cars) is from the VAG group. This means that whilst the Audi is arguably of a better quality than the the Skoda, the Skoda still represents better value for money over the Audi.

I think you'll be disappointed - vRS TDi's are already going for £15k under 12 months old. Somewhere between £8k and £9k would be realistic.
