Call to ban Petrol cars by 2040...

Ban the sale of new petrol cars, or ban use of them altogether?

Not that it matters of course, since this is the Lib Dems we're talking about. They won't be getting into Number 10 unless the British public go insane around General Election time.

I'd be happy driving on bio-ethanol, would seem very much like petrol. Even bio-diesel I could live with.

All the eco-peeps shout about how when we're all driving electric cars there will be no need for gears, no noise, and much smoother power delivery.

But I for one like running up and down the gears, I like a good raucous exhaust note, I like a kick up the **** as a good engine comes on cam.

What about the large amount of low level emissions from diesel cars that aren't present on petrol cars?

Diesel cars aren't nearly as clean as people think. Indeed, in many states in the US diesel cars cannot be registered due to their high emissions!

I'm looking forward to the decent Hydrogen (i.e. electric) efforts that are hopefully to come over the next couple of decades.

Im a sucker for torque, not really bothered about high screaming revs etc (though electric motors do tend to rev quite highly!) Full power available from the word go sounds quite cool to me, though its going to make for a less "engaging" drive given the lack of gearing etc i imagine these vehicles will have.

Personally i think 2040 is quite realistic, perhaps even conservative. Given the amount of money forward thinking company's like Honda are putting into these alternate fuel vehicles at the moment, I reckon they will feel as "normal" as say the Prius does now within 10 years. The lib dems are allowing over 30 years (i'll be nearly 60 by then EEEEK :o) for this to happen

How long before "MaX power variable resistors to provide a 50% power boost for your standard electric car" hit eBay i wonder? :)

well were gonna run out of oil soon enough so, why not

No we're not.

Which is far worse for the environment than petrol.

At least it's a lib dem idea and so hopefully won't happen.

If they made metal nano particles available, which can be used in petrol engines with next to no mods. Then I wouldn't mind to much.

I don't really care.

I will be almost 70, so I will only have to get the bus for a few years before I am brown bread.

Christ knows how they are gonna get me to the crematorium? Still I suppose it won't really be my problem then.

As long as ethanol will give us much more power I don't really care :D

Ohh, and I reckon the guy proposing this is dead by then... Shame :p
