I'm looking at a laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT

but there are a few models available and although they both have the same GFX card, one has a different range of available video memory

Is that dependent on the system RAM installed or is it just a limit of the graphics card? :(

thanks

Why do you want an 8400 in particular ?

Being able to play counterstrike doesn't mean anything as its all about the cpu. As for bioshock im sorry but i find it hard to beleive. Rember i am talking about the laptop card not desktop.

In the reviews ive seen they said that these cards cant handle any of the modern games at all and they were putting resolutions down to 1024x768.

the G7 series are far superior to them when it comes to gaming. Id not buy a laptop which had a 8600m GT in unless i didnt want to game on it.

the vaio i'm looking at comes with 8400gt, and all of the laptops with 8600 are ugly.

The way i look at it is that i can run BF2 on minimal settings on a Go 6200 so a 8400GT should easily do what i need.

i'm not a hardcore gamer and i'm not going to be playing games at anything above 1280x800, and HL2 is about the most demanding game i'll likely play on it, unless CoD4 is for the PC? i havent checked

what are you guys looking for when it comes to gaming performance?

the way i look at it, the screen is 60hz, and it only runs at a max of 1280x800, so as long as it plays most games at nearly 60fps at 1280x800 then i'm happy. Even if i cant have all the settings on high

The 8400GT is a pretty good card 128 bit bus & clocked a little higher than the 8400GS, still i have the 8400GS with 128 meg with a 64 bit bus and it does a pretty good job gaming @ medium-low settings & is fine for light gaming they both have 16 Shader Processors, Texture Units 8, Raster Operators 8
The 8600GT is a very capable card as 5ingh says.
2 gig system ram is the better amount to have nowdays.

Ive not had high settings for about 2 years now. I have a 6800GT currently. Im just saying theese cards are not worth the money and paying a bit extra to get a G7 is a far better.

i cant find a good looking 15.4" laptop for ~£750 with anything better than a 8400GT or 8600GT

Whats a G7? I assume i'd have to pay more? And then theres the challenge of finding finding a laptop that doesnt look and feel clunky

Ge means a G7xxx series card (eg a 7950gtx) as they are better at dx9 than the G8xxx cards (eg a 8400 gt) at the moment in laptops, but the G8xxx cards have the advantage of having dx10, I'm after a gaming laptop to go back to uni with after my year out but I'm waiting till xmas time see what comes out :)
If you get a decent laptop though (eg a Clevo one) you can change the gfx cards in them, as laptops now use pci-e, well a laptop version of it, with laptop gfx cards.

Can you get Clevo machines in the UK ?

I think the rock 770 maybe a clevo

Every review of the 8600 cards ive seen in laptops has said they are terrible compared to dx9 cards and the whole boasting of Dx10 is a waste of time because they would never be able to run any heavly encoded dx10 game as right now we havn't really seen any just a few dx10 effects.

i think i'll go with the vaio with 8400GT then, whatever the RAM figure means

oh thats a point, this thread went a bit off topic.

Anyone know what it means then? When a website has 2 laptops of similar specs but the gfx is stated as just "Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT" on one and then "Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT up to 319MB Memory"

But i wonder if that means there are different video ram configurations for that card?

Alienware are clevo, rock are clevo, dell xps are Clevo, theres loads of websites out there which tell you which laptops come from clevo, can't link though as they are compeitiors

Any one have any idea how the 8400GS does run games? e.g BF2? have just ordered a lappy with one in. not to bothered about high settings etc!

Up to 319 ram? O my it sounds like ADSL all over again. Are you over 1km away from your pc? otherwize i suggest you get a faster card :P
hah

but seriously, what do you reckon? Turbocache? I'm gonna give it 2GB of system RAM so it should have the max to work from. But i thought GT cards have dedicated ram
