To the bikers....

As well as trying to get to grips with counter steering through the bars, you might want to try with steering through the footpegs as well.

Give it a go and see what I mean. Putting weight/pressing down on the footpegs will steer you in whatever direction you want to go in.

I'm finding this kinda hard to explain as I've been doing it for years and its now a basic instinct, but try it anyway.

Or buy an Aprilia RSV, the thing almost steers itself through corners.......ask my R1 riding m8's that try and keep up with me.....:p

Never thought I would find more bros owners on OCUK :p I've got the 400, though I've only had it a month. Forum wise I only post on BCF.

I picked up a 650 about 6-7 weeks ago, I owned one of the first few 400 Bros to be imported to the UK back in the early 90's. Brilliant bike with fantastic handling. The hawkgt forum is a good site, lots of info and some very interesting mods. I'm currently waiting for a few goodies to arrive from the states :D. Wemoto are good for spares if you're looking for anything.

I find it hard to imagine how anybody could ride a bike and not use counter steering, it's something I've always done by instinct, always remember having it explained to me during my direct access lessons and me wondering why people needed to be taught it as it was a completely natural thing for me to do.

Odd how that works really.

OT - reading between the lines in your posts it sounds like you've only recently passed your test? I'd probably concentrate more on getting some miles under my belt, reading the conditions around you and getting used to the bike than worrying about how quickly I can get round x corner. Try a few riding/race schools for the more advanced stuff under the guidance of experts. Less likely to get run over by a truck that way :D.

Yeah, I passed DAS on the 13th of July and picked the bike (2006 Kawasaki Ninja ZX636) on the 31st, have since put just over 1400 miles on it, and will be putting another ~250 at the weekend - trip to Brecon with a club.

Don't get me wrong I'm not looking for speed in corners, I know that will come in time and experience, I just wanted to corner better, that's all :)

Scort.

Interesting, will have to give that a try, read about loads of different ways to steer - pushing with you knees and one with your arse :p are two examples.

True, I was always under the mistaken belief that you had to haul the bike around, but it's not like that at all.

On my course the intructor got us to hold the front wheel off of a push bike, he then spun it and got us to steer by moving it left/right (like you would riding a push bike), then up/down, like counter-steering. Felt strange to say the least.

Its addictive isn't it ;) , its a great rush when you get a set of corners spot on :D. I found doing a few race schools taught me a lot about what you can do on a bike, then practicing on a few track days. I'm toying with the idea of picking up a cheap gullarm or NC24 over winter purely for trackdays next year.

It feels fantastic, far more enjoyable than any straight-line speed I have done, with the added bonus of not being illegal :D Not that I'd do anything illegal on a public NSL road mind you ;)

Was practicing on the commute to and from work today, certainly made the day drag though, just sitting at my desk wishing I was out on the bike :(
