I'm looking at buying a cheap laser printer, just wondering what people's views on the various brands are? I'm aware that OcUK don't sell them, so don't talk about competitors, just the printers :p

My housemate had a Samsung one, worked fine mainly but then started to degrade in quality. I always said I'd rather pay more for a HP, and now I've seen one for actually less than you'll find the Samsungs.

It's a laserjet 1018, has anyone used this? Or any other cheap one (~£40-£50) that they can give an experience of?

It'll only be used for my final year at uni, so can't justify much more...

I have a cheap Brother one (think it's the ML-2030 or something like that). And it's been fantastic, had it for just over a year. I use it for uni work (printing draft papers or academic articles). I'd strongly recommend it. I've seen no degrading of the print quality.

The toner cartridges are pretty steep, but I get circa 3500 pages out of them (actually probably more if I think about it). And over all are MUCH cheaper to run that inkjets.

And I have to rate the technical support and driver availability as first class. MUCH MUCH better than any other printer I have used.

They always quote rubish in terms of the no. of prints you'll get out of a toner. The warning light "low toner" is lit at the moment on mine, but I know there's at least 500 pages left in it. I'm sure loads of people, change it even with no physical sign indicating it needs changing.

Seriously though it's a good printer, highly recommended

I've got a Laserjet 1010 and have had for about 4-5 years now, I bought it for ~£100 and given the amount of pages I've printed it has been well worth it for the convenience if nothing else. The first page out isn't the quickest but after that it seems pretty decent. :)

You know roughly how many out per cartridge?

I like my samsung ml-2251n. Over 2 years old, still on the original toner, 10/100 network port as standard. Cost about £110 I seem to remember. Certainly no loss of print quality.
I would avoid anything new by hp, they feel so cheap & nasty compared to what they used to produce.

i buy the samsung ml-2010 everytime as it is cheaper than buying a new cartridge and the old one flogs on auctions sites for 30 quid anyway :D great little printer!

I think I've been persuaded back to the Samsung then. Didn't realise there'd be such a good feeling towards them!

I have the Samsung ML2010 and I rate it very highly. The print quality is good as long as you give it time to warm up before printing. It only cost me £35 and even after a good 1500 pages I'm still on the original toner. It feels very solidly built as well, especially compared to any inkjet I have ever owned.

Samsung ML-1610 here. Had it 2 years in a busy work envirnoment and onto my third cartridge.

Every printer here at work (8) is a Samsung actually and never had a problem with any of them *touches wood*

Whoa, huge necro-bump.

I never actually did buy one, didn't do as much printing as I was expecting. But now, I need to. I've looked at the cheap HP and Samsungs, nothing's changed much. Ideally, I would like it attached to my IcyBox NAS, but I've read a review that says the cheap HPs are so cut down, they won't operate unless directly attached to an OS. Can someone confirm or deny whether this is the case with the Samsungs too?
