iPhone announcement for the UK

Are they gonna have cheaper plans is what im interested in? Id be happy with a phone with just texts and calls as most of the places i frequent have WiFi anyway.

Q: Is unlocking a concern?

Steve: "It's a constant cat and mouse game -- we have the same thing with the iPod with music." Steve looks at Matthew, "Are we the cat or mouse?" 'We have to stay one step ahead of them."

Does someone want to fill Apple in on UK law?

Yep, Carphone Warehouse have secured the distribution rights (or whatever).

Will be selling them from November 9th or so today's email states.

£269 for what size? 8gb?

Whats the point really - better just to get a touch - no contract and the same internet speed - EDGE is basically useless for the full internet.

1. Apple will bring out iphone2 soonish - which will probably drop the price, in addition the UK price is extortionate compared to the US price - again they will drop the price - I assume post Christmas.

It is a bit of a trap, this is why i cant wait for 2nd gen OpenMoko's.

If it wasnt so fugly - yeh!

i'm gonna wait and see on this rather than jump in on a silly contract - no doubt it will be big but better deals for your money come post xmas i would think

Given that the phone is unsubsidised and it seems you will be able to buy one and activate your contract later through iTunes (same as in the US) if you already have a good contract just buy one, don't register it and unlock it.

sounds like a good idea to me, i'm def on the 'wait and see fence'

Aplpe and O2 can go do one. I really wanted them to get this right but the price combined with an 18 month contract on a £35 tarrif for a phone that's form over function is just not doing it for me. Had it been that price on a 12 month, £25 contract then I might have got one, but instead I'm going to get an iPod touch and an N95.

Once again Apple are showing they don't know how the phone market works in Europe.

Does some one want to fill me in on UK law.
What are they supposed to have done that's illegal???

They haven't done anything illegal yet but under UK law operators are obliged to unlock phones for a small administration fee. It sounds like Apple aren't intending to let O2 provide an unlock for the iPhone.

This is my take on that - the phones will not be available without entering into an 18 month contract so they are talking about people circumventing the activation process and not about getting your phone unlocked after your contract is over. You can't just go and buy an N95 and then suddenly decide you don't want to pay for the contract you entered into and this is no different.

You don't really need the ipod if you carry a charger with you :D
