Hi chaps,

Whats the legality of this ?

A taxed car on a street, but without insurance (and not being driven or moved.)

Is this illegal?

Well I'll explain - my insurance runs out this weekend, was going to renew but can't afford it right now. If it is illegal to leave it on my street and not drive it, i'll just stick it in my dad's garage til I get paid in a few weeks.

I ride my bike into work anyway so it's not really an inconvenience.

Illegal for it to be on a public highway, if on the other hand it's a private road/parking area it's ok so long as you are willing to take the risk, stick it in the garage, it's far safer all round.

Whys is it illegal? if its stationary and not moved and taxed how could anyone possibly make a claim against it?

What if it was parked on a hill, handbrake cable snapped and ran into someone/car/house.
If someone else hit it and pushed it into another car/person. It could develop an electrical fault and catch fire and set light to other cars.

All unlikely, but still.

If it is sat on the road, and another car hits it, there has to be insurance in place for liability purpouses, the fact that it isnt in use is irrelevant. And as Jimbob said, if it was on a hill and rolled, if there is no insurance on it.. whos Liable? :)

What about if someone had DOC on thier policy from another vehicle would that be ok?

Again No, because every car HAS to have insurance, if the police rolled by and it was on the road they would have it because on PNC it would show as not holding insurance which of course is a criminal offence, DOC is just a formality for being able to drive other cars, its not an insurance policy in itself.

Okay that all makes sense - it's got 6 months tax already anyway, but i'll stick it in my pop's garage until I ever get round to driving again.

Loving this cycling btw, who needs to spend £30 a month on gym membership when I can get 2 hours exercise a day commuting!!

I've been training this week, down in town so I 've been able to walk. It's great it wakes you up and it feels good. Much more relaxed than bombing around in a car. Back to normal work sat night though :(.

If it's going to be of the road for a while you might as well get the tax rebated, save some money.
