Hello all,

I'm planning on changing from pc's to macs, and i'm thinking of buying today - a mac mini. (making sure i like it before selling my desktop pc). Then i'll buy a mac book or the pro next month.
I'm in Las Vegas @ the moment, i'm buying a mac mini later and was wondering can i upgrade the hard drive myself @ a later date if so what drives do they take and how's best to format the drive once in the mini.

Thanks for advice in advance :D

I really wouldn't think the Mac Mini AND a Macbook would be a good idea - the Mini's only basically the same spec as the Macbook, so you may as well just have a Macbook or MBP and use it in clamshell mode at home.

Just my 2p :)

[pre buying factoid] If you can wait and like saving money, Leopard will be out soon and will come pre-installed on new Macs after its release. If you buy now with Tiger you'll have to pay to upgrade. A discount if you're lucky. [/pre buying factoid]

If you're buying in the USA be sure to ditch the box before you carry it through Customs and Excise ;)

Thanks, i work for an airline so fairly clued up on that one lol :D

As for the other quotes, i still need a desktop for the missus to use while i'm away so hence both mac mini and a mac book is a requirement. I've decided to get the dearer mac mini with a larger hard drive instead as the cheaper one has a combo drive instead of a dvd writer etc.
Still guess the mac book pro would be better too, larger screen is better.

Do you game? I mean run games (in Windows) that requires more power than what the Intergrated Chip provides?

If not, then I can see getting both the MacBook and Mac Mini justified (one for moving around and one for staying home with the missus) The MacBook upgrades is really really easy (RAM and Harddrive) - I own one and have upgraded it.

AFAIK, MacBook Pro is harder to upgrade in terms of Harddrive.
The Mac Mini is simple, either get the one with Superdrive if you want it or get stuck with the smaller Harddrive combo drive (which is really bad in terms of Consumer choice)

Personally, if you want portability (with no need for higher graphics horsepower) get the MacBook.

What he said ^^

I was running a Mac Mini in our living room as HTPC, I then bought a macbook and it replaced the Mac Mini :)

Thanks for this reply, no i don't game on the pc anymore after having a ps3 and wii i don't see the point. But yes that's what i was getting at using a mac book for when i travel with work abroad every week, and the mini to use as desktop for the other half to keep her quiet.

Thanks guys for the invaluable info that you have provided, and the opinions too. :D
