Morrisons FTL

I said this would happen in a previous thread. :) Staff have 100% backing from management.

I always find being ID'd amusing being 28 and looking it I tend to laugh and then ask to see the manager as I don't carry ID to much hastle if someone pinches my wallet!

So if you are 80 years old and get asked ID and you not got any. Your buggered lol.

Thats funny.

Also the statement from Morrisions at the bottom of the article is also quite amusing.

They seemed to have missed the point about this bloke looking 72.

They've got caught before, getting caught again could mean they lose their license to sell alcohol - considering what a disaster that would be they've made everybody prove their age.

That includes grumpy old men.

We have been caught quite a few times.. We have upped the measures to prevent this from happening again including refusing to sell booze to people who look like they are already drunk/could cause trouble and known people who hang around on streets. This applies to our store maybe other but as the store I work at has been done before the senior team are taking no chances.

If they don't have a strict policy then it leaves it to the discretion of the checkout staff, they are checkout staff for a reason (old retired [don't care], you teenagers [who have friends] etc). It shouldn't be needed on a 72 year old man, but the person on the till were doing their job as was the management - not leaving the company open. :p

At least that store has got the staff to ask EVERYONE for ID when purchasing alcohol. It didnt seem to be a one off.

I think that fair tbh. I was in a queue a few weeks ago and the woman in front of me had some lager along with foodstuff and was promtly asked for ID. She didnt have any and, to me, looked 21 but very close to it. She told the checkout person she understood the procedure and wasnt in anyway annoyed about it all, she was doing her job.

If it stops young people drinking then it must be a good thing.

If its store policy to ID anyone buying alcohol, I don't really see the problem to be honest. Unless he's never shopped there before, he should know better.

I'm sure hundreds of older people are asked the same question everyday, and have no problem answering it. They'd be the first to complain about underage drinkers etc..

Just because one idiot decides to complain about it, doesn't make it worthy of being in the news.

I think it's a load of bull. And he's right - it is bureaucracy gone mad. You don't need to ask someone who is clearly overage whether they are fit to buy alcohol. It's senseless.

It's like being asked whether you can speak fluent English or if your full-time residence is Planet Earth and if you can't prove either they'll shove you out the door. Absolute rubbish.

No, it's a simple case of where you would draw the line. You ID every alcohol purchase or leave it up to the discretion of the teller. Due to the area this store is located in, they took the decision to ask everyone purchasing alcohol for ID. If he doesn't like it he can shop elsewhere.

But that can happen actually...a friend of mine couldnt apply for a citizenship because he neither has done his secondary education in Britain nor is passed certain English language exams that the Home Office asks for, yet he speaks perfect English. Its ironic because most British folk are the same in terms of English language qualifications(or even have none at all) and their only written proof that would by default count them as English speakers is their country of birth, stated in their documents.

But on the subject, yeah it seems too far! The only case I could think of refusing to sell alcohol to such person is if he is suspected to buy it to someone else but then the ID plays no role in such situation.

A Morrisons spokesman said: "We take our responsibility with regard to selling alcohol very seriously and all our stores operate the Task 21 scheme, which addresses the difficulties our staff face in being able to determine if a customer is legally old enough to buy alcohol.

Maybe they should have a scheme where they employ staff with a brain?

Sorry, but it's ridiculous, however you look at it. Tesco's enforce a policy that if you look under 25, you will be ID'd, othersw it's 21. There has to be a line, and this is stepping way over it. Have they not heard of a thing called "common sense", or are they relying on their manager's word to allow them to use that too?

That rolleyes wasn't aimed at you, before you get grumpy.. i know some people do ;)
