DS3 Chipset Very Hot

I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 board with passive heatsinks (it's not the version with heatpipes) on the northbridge/southbridge.

It it normal for these to be hot to touch? As in you cant hold a finger on the heatsink for more than 3/4 seconds without it being painful. The bios suggests its at around 54c.

I'm not sure what i can to to improve the airflow in my case. All the cables are neat and tied out the way. Im using a small Super Lanboy case with 120mm fan front and back.

Thanks

Yeah they do get very hot, as do the P35 that replaced it. I tend to have a side and rear fan rather than front and rear, so it cools the motherboard & memory generally.

The P35-DS4 chipset doesn't get hot at all.

@OP:
Get some 40mm fans on the 2 sinks, I don't know how it's with gigabytes but asus uses carp cooling paste, perhaps replace with AS5?

Where did ya get ds4 from?
It's about the DS3, wich doesn't have heatpipes just small heatsinks, the ds4 has way better cooling capcity, it has a lot more heatsink area.

Such aggression. Type more slowly. Read more slowly. Comprehend.

I just got an Akasa 40mm x 20mm fan and screwed it onto the chipset cooler on my P965 DS3P as the heatsink was way too hot for my liking, wasn't causing any probs but thought it'd be better to be safe then sorry.

My S3 heated up to about 55c ~ in games, and on a hot day it got even higher. I replaced the stock heatsink with a 40mm Akasa fan, that did nothing for the temperature which confused me. I then modded my case with a fan blowing under the graphics card aimed at the southbridge, and my temps dropped to 30c~ which makes me think that the temperature you get from programs like SmartFan is actually being reported from either the Southbridge or very near it.

There is a small cyclinder on it's side next to the chip that I originally thought was a thermal sensor, but apparantly it's not and it's something else, so I'm not sure...

Oh, I also got an Akasa 40mm hsf for the Northbridge, that had a thermal sticky pad so didn't need screwed on, however it was very loud (5500 RPM!) and started whistling after about 4 weeks so I removed it and went back to the stock heatsink and the temperatures were still 30c~ after the case mod I did.

My P35 DS3P has a larger heatsink than the old DS3, but not as large as the DQ6/DS4.

If i turn my PC off and touch it, it's damn hot, almost as hot as my graphics card (x1950xt).
It seems normal for them to get very hot tbh. Mine is around 40 degrees according to easytune (idle).

the stock coolers on the ds3 are useless i've found -

I replaced the north bridge one with a hr05 with a 80mm fan blowing on it (low volts so inaudible)

On the south bridge I fitted one of those £5 zalman northbridge heatsink with a few bits snapped off to make way for the GFX card. 40mm fan over that, low volts, jobs a good 'un.

Also, I have next to no airflow in my case due to watercooling.

EDIT: Piccy before I fitted the hr05 (the zalman is a tight fit):
