Just when i was about to give my computer to my mum and get a new one for myself the PSU blows up......It took half the fuses in the house with it as well :(

While I was using my PC, it started making a funny noise, before I could switch it off there was a loud pop and a flash from the back and then smoke appeared from the PSU.

Bloody hell

Rant over.

There's nothing to see.....you can hear something rattling around inside the PSU (maybe a exploded capacitor?) but I can't see anything....

I bought it back in April 2006

5 year warranty if I remember rightly. :)
3 Year Warranty, I hope your system is okay would totally suck if its taken the hardware with it - you got a spare PSU to test the system?

Tagan has one of the best RMA services available, turnaround is like no more than 2 days usually via nanopoint. . . just make sure you keep in contact with them, get the name of person you dealt with etc in case you need to chase them up. :)

You must have had a faulty batch, I've had my current Tagen 580W U15 since Feb 2006 no problems as yet. . .

hmm why can they invent some sort of breaker interface between psu and mobo that stops a blown psu taking out the system

I think they already have something like this in place. :)

FWIW, I've been using my 480W tagan since 2004, no problems. Just make sure it doesn't get full of dust and it should outlast the PC.

I had two blow but each time I've sent them off to Nanopoint and they've sent me shiny new ones within a week. PSU blow - it's a fact of life but what's important is how they deal with it and Tagan do better than most. Hope you can get it swapped out.

Always used Tagans and never had any issues with the PSU's

However, I did receive a tagn which was rattling, I took a look at it and there was metal nut flying around inside the PSU!! Imagine if I hadn't noticed this and put together my £1500 system and it destroyed all the components! :(

Just curious: How is a (out of warranty) PSU supposed to die? Should it go quietly or 'spectacularly' WITH/WITHOUT taking anything else out, i.e. components, fuse-boxes, etc? Doubt any PSU is built to last forever but how should it die is what I'm trying to understand

depends on the PSU, and what causes it to die. it could be any of them

This is the first time I've heard of a Tagan blowing up!

Got any more examples?

I can't remember the year, but when the TG480 U01s were new (I think that's the model number) loads of them were ticking or blowing up. I had about 4 replacements via Nanopoint due to the ticking. Very good RMA service, just a shame about some of their manufacturing problems as the units themselves feel very high quality, just some batches are let down by the ticking/short life problems.

But they all seem to go in a 'spectacular*' way meaning that maybe PSUs don't or can not die quietly

*i.e. blowing-up, bad smell, smoke, etc.
