Probably a bit sad, but I was playing through Dreamfall: The Longest Journey and after entering the Dark People's city I was immediately struck by what seemed like music sent straight down from the heavens. It was so beautiful I actually just stood in one place for a good half hour, just to take in the awesomeness of it all. I also captured a sample:

I checked out the Dreamfall soundtrack but it wasn't on there, so it seems to be just a collection of background audio and sound effects; pretty amazing if you ask me, up there with some of my favourite Brian Eno albums.

Anyone else ever encountered something similiar in a game?

I always liked the HL2 music, especially the HL2 music in the fight scenes, Im intro the retro mario themes and sonic they were great and still are.

Well you're all wrong, the best music ever made in games was by Rob Hubbard on the Commodore64... :D

Those were the days, classic 8bit SID music... Can't beat it... :)

red alert aftermath....there was a particular track in there....also intro music to redalert went great with the vid.

<<< big red alert fan

I always liked those 4kb chip music ditties on the front of scene released games, not sure that counts :p

I have saved the entire half life soundtrack because its very well done
