The National Lottery - Worth playing?

i play the same numbers every wednesday and saturday. Just 1 line. £2 a week isn't putting me in the red. If i win, then its a bonus, if i don't, its just 1 pint.

My Mum's friend's niece picked up 6 numbers on the weekend!

She didn't even win a million, £650k. Still a nice amount but I have always linked winning the lottery with becoming a millionaire.

Someone needs to go back to school!!!!!

If its 5% PA on £8,000000 then that works out at £421,052.63 PA which equates to £8097.00 per week.

Assuming its in a tax free saving account ;) and if not then its still £6072.75 with 25% scraped off for Gordon Brown to buy his bitches with :)

5% of £8,000,000 is £400,000

£1,000,000 is enough for most people to not have to work anymore.
- £200,000 to clear the mortgage and buy a sensible car
- £800,000 in the bank earning interest. After taxes that would be about £24,000 PA.

you cant get UK tax free on those amounts and the tax is 40%

5% is 7692 a week ( annual non compounded ) , 60% of it is £4625 , all looks right to me

When it used to be drawn just once a week i used to do £5 a week for about the first 2 years, since it was drawn twice a week i did the odd £5'er here and there and have so far managed to get 4 numbers 7 times & countless tenners but would still guess that i am quite a bit down on the money i have actually spent on it.

Came to my senses (if you can call it that) a few months back, and with the G/F we have 2 lines on each draw coming in at £16 per month by direct debit. Not great odds, but it's probably the only chance most people have of becoming a millionaire without actually putting any work in.

I play the scratchcards once in a blue moon - when I am in the queue in the shop and spy the tickets and feel that the pound in my pocket is a bit "lucky" or something.

When I am back from uni my dad will buy me a ticket on the normal lottery from time to time, but we would all share big winnings no matter who won out of me, my mum & dad.

I've never spent a single £1 on it because (a) 14 million to one is *really* lousy odds, and the odd tenner's no compensation for the outlay. (b) If I did it one week I'd have to use the same numbers every week forever to avoid the risk they'll come up the week after I stop. That would be unbearable!

Overall you'd be better off saving £1 a week for a year and getting £50's worth of Premium Bonds (I think £50's the minimum stake these days). They're also a lousy bet/investment, but at least your original stake only disappears at the rate of inflation.

PS I prefer the term "tax on hope" to "stupid tax", though they amount to the same thing.

“I usually put £5 on a week. It's petty cash, it doesn't even buy two pints.”
If you think about it yearly then its £260

I spend £5 a week on cheese, £5 a week on tea/coffee at work, £5 a week on a nice steak. There are plenty of things you can assess as being non-essential.

Personally I play 2 lines on Sat/Wed and 1 line on the Euromillions. So that's £5.50 a week. In the 3 months odd that I've been playing i've had 4 numbers once, and 3 numbers twice I think. So i'm not doing too badly :)

I feel far less wasteful about spending £5 a week on the lottery than buying an extra 2 drinks at the pub every week..

£1 a week, dd, I just don't buy that packet of crisps and choccie bar at the end of the week and put the money to something that has a tiny chance of greatly improving my life.

That's £38 I have spent since the start of the year, and I have won £30, onyl an £8 deficit for the chance of more :)
