I don't think my computer has ever been out-dated, so your/his point falls flat on its face for a start.
My main problem with this thread, aside from it being here instead of consoles, is that its entire premise is so utterly flawed that it doesn't leave room for discussion except to correct him on how much PCs actually cost.
Not to mention that asking people to justify their purchase "because consoles are cheaper" is just arrogant.
I can understand your reaction to this type of thread for what it generally is, but to me it didn't seem to me to be that much of a trolling session.
If he wants to know why people prefer a more expensive system over a console, then he has the right to ask. There is a small chance he just wants to see what people prefer with a PC rather than just be here to wave his much cheaper console around and laugh at those who have spent a lot more money.
As for your rig not being out-dated - that's fair enough. The point he was making doesn't fall on its face purely on the basis of your rig though. Many people will spend £1k-£2k on rigs and find them to be out-dated within a matter of months - the element of 'e-peen' then kicks in and the hand in pocket action is all too familiar for people not wanting to fall behind.
That same element is lost on consoles because there a 'level playing field' if you want.
The question that the OP poses is a good one (albeit over asked) if it's not done in a 'toying way'.
The question is one I have asked myself pretty recently as well, given that I spent around £1.7k on a machine last summer, that wouldn't be able run Crysis at full detail.
When I bought my Xbox 360, it made perfect sense for me to be changing from PC to Console. From the money I made selling off my PC (at a great loss I might add) I bought a 360, a few games and accessories which amounted to around £400.
I made a good 'profit' whilst still retaining the ability to game both locally and online with my console. A new game here and there amounted to much less to a 'Graphics Card' or 'CPU' upgrade and I felt very stupid for spending so much on a PC.
Yet, here I am a few months down the line and I'm already plotting together a new rig purely for gaming. I have a MacBook Pro so my actual 'PC' needs (multimedia, browsing etc) are catered for by that, but I miss the mouse and keyboard gaming - the full control over the game (cause I suck with a controller) and all the things that come with PC gaming like the custom maps and mods and so on.
I know I'll be once again spending more money than I should and the temptation to upgrade further still, will exist - at considerable cost to me.
If you're in a good job that pays and/or you're good at your job and have a nice wad of cash left over to spend on your PC then that's great.
I would say a good few people on here aged 16 up to around 23 are still in and around eduation and aren't in full time work to justify a lot of the expense that comes with PCs - yet many, many people still go down the PC route instead of the much lower maintenance console. Some do both.
The decision to see the cost difference and still chose the more expensive one is a conflict of sorts and semi-interesting if you want see it as such. As I said, if the interest in that 'conflict' isn't done in a poking or trolling way then I see no harm in it - which was the case when I read the OP.
zzzzzzzz

Even you think the PC he quoted was overkill.
