How can you justify a 2 grand gaming pc?

I don't think my computer has ever been out-dated, so your/his point falls flat on its face for a start.

My main problem with this thread, aside from it being here instead of consoles, is that its entire premise is so utterly flawed that it doesn't leave room for discussion except to correct him on how much PCs actually cost.

Not to mention that asking people to justify their purchase "because consoles are cheaper" is just arrogant.

I can understand your reaction to this type of thread for what it generally is, but to me it didn't seem to me to be that much of a trolling session.

If he wants to know why people prefer a more expensive system over a console, then he has the right to ask. There is a small chance he just wants to see what people prefer with a PC rather than just be here to wave his much cheaper console around and laugh at those who have spent a lot more money.

As for your rig not being out-dated - that's fair enough. The point he was making doesn't fall on its face purely on the basis of your rig though. Many people will spend £1k-£2k on rigs and find them to be out-dated within a matter of months - the element of 'e-peen' then kicks in and the hand in pocket action is all too familiar for people not wanting to fall behind.

That same element is lost on consoles because there a 'level playing field' if you want.

The question that the OP poses is a good one (albeit over asked) if it's not done in a 'toying way'.

The question is one I have asked myself pretty recently as well, given that I spent around £1.7k on a machine last summer, that wouldn't be able run Crysis at full detail.

When I bought my Xbox 360, it made perfect sense for me to be changing from PC to Console. From the money I made selling off my PC (at a great loss I might add) I bought a 360, a few games and accessories which amounted to around £400.

I made a good 'profit' whilst still retaining the ability to game both locally and online with my console. A new game here and there amounted to much less to a 'Graphics Card' or 'CPU' upgrade and I felt very stupid for spending so much on a PC.

Yet, here I am a few months down the line and I'm already plotting together a new rig purely for gaming. I have a MacBook Pro so my actual 'PC' needs (multimedia, browsing etc) are catered for by that, but I miss the mouse and keyboard gaming - the full control over the game (cause I suck with a controller) and all the things that come with PC gaming like the custom maps and mods and so on.

I know I'll be once again spending more money than I should and the temptation to upgrade further still, will exist - at considerable cost to me.

If you're in a good job that pays and/or you're good at your job and have a nice wad of cash left over to spend on your PC then that's great.

I would say a good few people on here aged 16 up to around 23 are still in and around eduation and aren't in full time work to justify a lot of the expense that comes with PCs - yet many, many people still go down the PC route instead of the much lower maintenance console. Some do both.

The decision to see the cost difference and still chose the more expensive one is a conflict of sorts and semi-interesting if you want see it as such. As I said, if the interest in that 'conflict' isn't done in a poking or trolling way then I see no harm in it - which was the case when I read the OP.

zzzzzzzz

And as I predicted, these two posts were all about my attitude and didn't address how flawed the OP is.

Yes, because we're trying to explain to you why the thread is actually worth while. Why can't you understand that people wish to discuss this? I would like to be able to read about peoples thoughts without your flame interrupting the flow.

Now would you kindly quit your rant and let us get on with it? :D

Good points Slogan.

To see the OPs questions as anything else is pretty immature or short-sighted. Given the high costs of various gaming systems it's something we all think about and have to weigh up.

Which means you obviously upgraded recently - im guessing in the last 1-2 months. Its relatively new and one of the best specs so of course its not going to be out dated...
Yup, I recently upgraded my mobo and CPU for pretty much pennies when you work out how much I will get back from selling the previous stuff. I might not even sell the old CPU. How much would I get selling my Xbox to pay toward a 360, £50? Might as well give it away.

Even then, I could downgrade a ton and still have a computer more powerful than an X360 and PS3.

Your original post is flawed in how much PCs cost, and you seem to think it's expensive to upgrade.

Would be fine by me if the OP was remotely accurate in its statements.

Absolutely. I've considered going down the console route a number of times. In fact I did for a couple of years back in the PS1 days - I left my PC behind altogether. I was a fresher student and tight on cash.

Consoles are slowly becoming more and more viable and feature rich for hardcore gaming, but they've become a good bit more expensive, espesially the games.

In terms of justifying the expense of a PC, it's certainly been a bad year for game titles. Quarter 4 looks better tho.

Happy now mate? Jesus christ, i aint an expert but i know that a new gaming pc with all the best things would cost 2 grand, and this particular one costs over £2500. With an even better case it may push £2600-£2700.

Stop saying im inacurate because as proven here - im not

*EDIT* lol, just thought it hasnt got a screen - 3 grand for the whole shabang.

Also, im not knocking overclockers prices, its actually very good price. But even though it may be better then competitors similar pcs, its still a hell of a lot of money :)

You do not need £2000 today to build a very good Rig even with Screen/Mouse/KB inc.

SLI is overkill so is a 30" Monitor, upto 24" is fine after that you can use your TV.

O yea mate dont get me wrong, i know that, but im talking about the people who spend the full whack on top banana systems, like the pc in my link :)

Thats what i meant in the OP - systems like this :)

no one has to spend that much, and yes you can build a system for a lot less.

All I know is the last time I built a rig it was around that figure. It was extremely rapid back then and has served me very well for over three years.

It's my preferred method of building PC's and works well for me.

People can justify an expensive PC in the same way they can justify an expensive car. A cheaper car will do the same basic things; perhaps it won't be as quick, as comfortable or as glamorous, but the expensive cars (and PCs, and TVs, and fridges, and vacuum cleaners, and washing machines, and phones, and....) are all there for those that want to spend more to get something better.

Erm, that PC is incredibly overkill so I wouldn't quote that.

I even think that my PC is pretty overkill, the graphics card is only just getting some use and the CPU won't be fully utilised for ages. Like I said, I could downgrade a few things by a fair amount and still have a machine more powerful than a console.

If you're trying to convince me that you're not trolling, you just used the worst example.

I doubt very much he feels he needs to convince you of anything.

Well my rig is certainly up there as top notch, and dont think it would cost £2000 but I change parts in stages at times so hard to keep track, some would say my CPU/GPU and HDD's are overkill.

But you still do not need spend £2000 to get max out of new games now or due soon., the stupidly large monitors (with crappy timings) and a extra GPU (SLI) to drive it could throw price up but there is no need for that.

Ferrari's and Ford escorts both drive you from A to B.

If you had the money, which one would you get.....

nuff said.

But he was trying so hard. :( Even you think the PC he quoted was overkill. :p

The defense rests. Left out the display and sound as you'd need those for a console too.

Also left out the OS but XP is about £50.

I can understand how a genuine PC enthusiast would feel patronised and belittled by the OP,there is much more behind the building of a highend air/water/pelt or phase cooled system than to attain high 3D framerates.

The actual building and configuring of the system is a challange and the results very rewarding,overclocking/benchmarking,constant tweaking and improvement of the system and system cooling go hand in hand with the construction of a custom build.

A console is purely functional, they do their job very well but they have little flexibilty, even from a pure gaming standpoint they are limited,RTS and FPS are awkward imo on a console due to the pads, whereas games that feel more natural on a pad can easily still be played on the pc due to dual analogue pads being compatible with windows.

The OP's pricing is way off also, even with extreme cooling solutions a highend system can be built for considerably less than 2 grand.

Finally some sense.
