Hi chaps, as title. Hopefully picking up the new car on Saturday but worried the cover note wont be here in time to get it taxed.

Asked the dealer to do it and they said I need my cover note to do it and won't accept photocopies so the insurers can't fax it to them.

What can be done?

cheers.

AFAIK they're right - my dealer would only accept the cover note or an emailed copy from the insurer (which they couldn't provide ).

However, the garage I purchased from was fine with me rolling out without tax - saying it was at my own risk if I got caught!

Which I did :D

the dealor should have the v5 in their name (as their a dealor there name will never officially go on the logbook). They should have the MOT and their dealor insurance covers insurance on every car they own/drive

So yes they can and most will unless they think your easy money

Well I managed to get 12months MOT, 12 Months warranty and a cambelt out of them so they wouldn't give me tax (I tried) So I said I would give them cash if they tax incase the cover note is late but they couldn't they said?

Maybe this guy was a bit clueless?

The dealer will literally pop down the local post office and buy the tax, so yes the insurance documents are needed (just as if you went and did it yourself)

If you're not yet the 'registered' owner of the car and don't have a reminder.....

You can actually still Tax a car with the 'new owner' (Green Slip) - But you still need to show an MOT (If needed) and a valid Insurance Certificate.

Well they obviously have insurance and the V5 is in there name so no reason why they can't tax it! He done mine.

I keep seeing this argument appear.
Does anyone have a definite definitive answer on this?
My last two cars have been brand new so I've had 12 months tax on the car.
However they still require my insurance details before they can get tax - either my certificate or cover note from my insurance firm.
My last 2nd hand car was the same - I got 6 months tax out of them and once again they needed my insurance details to get the tax.

Now these last 3 car purchases have all been from large dealers and as I was getting the tax for free then it isn't as if they were being awkward.
Especially as I just call my insurance company, get covered and they get a cover note sent directly to the dealer so it is there next day.
If they don't actually require my insurance then why bother asking me for it?

Like i say, my last car didn't have any tax on it, was a VW trade-in and they must sell the tax or something, i got money knocked off the car and said i wanted tax, i had to pay which was fine but i said i wanted you to tax it so i can drive the car away, this was done using the dealers insurance as far as i know.

:confused:Your dealer just needs his trade insurance cert. If he won't do it then you have to wonder if he even had trade insurance!!!

Wrong! The dealer should have a trade policy. With their insurance cert they can tax any car if they have the other appropriate docs. They do not need the OPs insurance cert they just need their trade cert.

Hmm wonder why he's making it hard for me then as he definitely has trade insurance (I remember him putting up the trade plates on the test drive)

When I worked in a garage we used to tax all sorts with the trade certificate, including rally cars registered to people who had nothing to do with the garage whatsoever :p

Possibly just can't be bothered. He knows that if you have your own insurance cert you will just tax it yourself.

If the car isn't an ex demo or similar and it isnt registered in the dealers name well we need the customers insurance as this is needed to go the post office with and tax the car.
It cant be taxed with the dealers trade policy as the log book is not registered in the dealers name.
Some absolute crap being spouted in this thread by the way

I have personally taxed a car, registered to somebody else, using a garage trade certificate. I handed over the money myself! The postmasters name was Eddie!

our insurance policy states it covers any car belonging to us, leant to us or leased to us or in our care.
Does that mean we can tax any car?
