Anyone on these boards ever competed in a hillclimb event? Quite fancy a crack at it myself maybe in the MX5. Just trying to get an idea of the costs involved etc. I have heard it is one of the cheaper ways to take part in motorsport hence it appeals.

My dad used to do it all the time and eventually i will be doing it to, as for it being cheaper well hmmm.. yeah kinda.

You will first need to get yourself a racing b license before you can do anything other than a track day. Costs of this varies but generally more than £30-50. Licence lasts 1 year, you can get your licence upgraded by getting the head marshal from 3 events to sign your licence saying you drove in a respectfull manor.
This will get you a copy of the infamous "Blue Book" which contains all the british motor sport rules and regulations.

Not sure if the car prep is the same down south but up here you need the following done to a road car:

Ignition switch sticker indicating which way turns it off in clear red writting £2
Sticker indicating the tow point £2
A yellow battery earth cable (electrical tape) £1.50
Decent secure seats £should have them
Timing Light Splitter (small piece of alloy that breaks the timing beam) £10-15
MOT, Tax and insurance. £ should have them
Suitable helmet £as much as you can afford £200-1000
Fireproof race suit. £as much as you can afford £150-500

All equipment must be up to british standards BS

As for Entry to events again it varies, but my local one is £150 for the weekend.

Racing up a hill. ;)

Edit: I believe a course is set out, usually up a twisty steep hill, and people are timed to drive up it.

Yes various classes, timed runs, usually up a steep hill in a tight twisty course, aim is to beat the clock and get the fastest time up the hill for your class, or if you have a single seater and the budget of a small F3000 team, try and get the fastest time or beat the record time for your class.

It can be cheap, it can be expensive.

I know guys that race for £1000 a season, i know of guys that race for £100,000 a season.

MattPC: Just realise you said MX5, if its without the hard top you will need a roll bar up to fia spec. As you are not allowed to race a softop without protection.

Ahhh, That could be slight problem. Still not impossible. I'd just have to buy a proper roll bar not just one of those "for cosmetic use only" ones that are often fitted to the MX5!:o
