MS are to release an enhanced drive with new interactive features....Doesn't really make the older drives obsolete in any way from my pov.

"The announcement was made during Microsoft's 25th hardware anniversary in London. The updated HD-DVD drive's advanced interactive features were demonstrated by Mark Bennett, Microsoft's European business development director for HD DVD."

Surely it's just the software that needs updating and not a new drive as such - as the drive is just that - a drive bolted on via USB.

Can't see what has to be added electronically to the drive when it's the player software on the 360 that's doing all the decoding etc.

My words exactly. There's got to be more to it aside from the interactive additions.

Faster read times and less noise perhaps?

Not sure...

If its software related then its weird they're releasing a new HD DVD drive.

Unless this new one is black and for the Elite?

Maybe it needs more onboard memory than the current drives have?

Don't the current drives have ~192mb free going by the memory screen on the 360 (too lazy to turn mine on to check :))?

If that isn't enough for the HD DVD title then wouldn't it be possible to use a 360's HDD for anything extra (obviously this solution wouldn't help those with a Core and HD DVD)?

Well my drive, which is no longer used is rather silent so I doubt it's that. Guess we need to wait for more information. I'm not too happy that we're seeing a new drive already given that the 'old' ones are still relatively new.

Am I right in thinking that LiteOn were going to be manufacturing the new HD DVD drives? Current drives are all made by Toshiba.

LOL, an optical drive is silly? why?!

Is it just because the HD-DVD drive is quieter and you sit headphones on the desk instead of speakers, thus needing a quieter drive to avoid the noise drowning out your headphones (on the desk)?

;)

Seriously, I've never heard an XB360 (my own ones or friends) be so loud that it got in the way of gaming quietly, or interfered with in-room conversations, some people just expect it to whisper!
