HDMI to VGA, how is it done?

Hi, same as title, I have searched for HDMI to VGA converters, they all seem very expensive (£100+), but it is possible to get HDMI to DVI converter cables fairly cheaply (£5 ish), I was wondering if it is simply possible to use a HDMI to DVI cable and just shove a DVI to VGA on the end, as these come bundled with most graphics cards?

It won't work, the DVI connector can carry analogue signals as well which is why those converters work. HDMI is only digital.

yep ill second that statemant, thats why the ps3 needs a box to convert the signel to put it onto a analog panel.

Thats irritating, so their is no way of displaying a 360 or ps3 in a high resolution on a VGA monitor?

The 360 has a vga cable, and the ps3 has component cables which can easily be converted to vga.

While digital to analogue conversion isn't difficult, a hdmi signal can't be converted to vga easily because it is encrypted with hdcp. That's why the boxes are so expensive, they do work though.

I know someone who did it but it envolved using his Camcoder as throughput lol.

So if I got a 360 I could simply plug it straight in with a VGA cable? Also is it possible to adjust the resolutions on the 360?

Aye it is, you can change resoluition in the settings on the dashboard.

Yep, but it has to be the official 360 VGA cable.

Indeed it is, and if your monitor supports it, you can go right up to 1920x1090.

Yes, my xbox is plugged into my LG monitor via VGA.
If you do use the xbox 360 via VGA then your better off getting the original Micorsoft VGA cable and not the after market ones.

Nice, probably get one soon for playing Halo 3. The resolutions can be set with a 4:3 aspect ratio cant they? Do all the editions of the 360 have the VGA output?

Indeed it is, and if your monitor supports it, you can go right up to 1920x1090.

The CRT I'm using goes up to 2048x1536
