Just a random and slightly odd question...

Am i right to assume if i bought an Amp, a seperate CD player and speakers and connected it all together...it would be far better than buying a complete micro system from a single brand?

And by "better" i mean in terms of sound quaility etc.

Generally speaking I would say yes, although with a seperates system you have to make sure that the units you select work well together to create the sound you want.

You could screw it up but if you demo stuff you should be ok.

Yes. Midi/micro systems are "toys" although a few brands do respectable micro systems, Teac etc. But generally seperates will offer superior sound quality (plus other things such as input/output options, upgradability, build etc)

A little and now old Denon DM3 was a nice sounding micro machine, see them now for less than £100 on auction.
Next step up a Linn Classik, approx £500 used. These are a great little set-up, and you need a well match separates to get any better for similar or more money. But then loose the one box compact convenience...... just depends on your needs.

I would also suggest that micro's are usually less powerful for the same money

But there is no relationship between "power" and quality.

My Daughter manages to make her music heard right across the house, and down the street with her DM3 !! :(

Dont know where I suggested there was :D

Mind you , its possible to buy a really decent 200w amp and awful speakers also (which will still sound terrible)
