I will be building a PC with some althon 64 bits in it. The PSU I was planning on using is a Hiper PSU, now reading about the problems with them randomly blowing up makes me wonder if I should buy a better PSU, thoughts?
I wouldn't let the scaremongerers put you off. Nothing wrong with Hiper PSU's. However, if you can spend a bit more then it might be worth going for an enermax or something instead.
The main problem with Hipers has been the modular 580w versions (Type-R), partly because they have been significantly the best sellers in the range any problems with them will be highlighted but also once a reputation has been gained or lost it can tend to stick.
I would definately buy a decent psu. It's not scaremongering with the Hiper's, it's a genuine problem. Just do a search for failed/exploding Hipers and you will see. Some of us are losing other components due to Hiper's blowing up. It's simply not worth the risk.
if you do want a hiper stay away from a 580w one. the other ones though, 530, 480w ones have not had complaints with.
and the 670w and higher ones i don;t know if anyone has bought one of those.
I had a Hiper 580R for just one day before it began to sound like a demented frog. Based on my own experience and that of many users of this PSU on these and other threads I believe that Hiper PSUs to be of inferior build quality.
My hunch is that Hiper's strongest feature is it's shiny finish.
