Top gear - Lambo LP640 V Golf GTI

The same as any other thread. Discussion.

A discussion about why a television program didn't race a 330ci against a lambo, instead of a GTi.

Yeah, great discussion.

I'm going to start a thread on why they didn't use a vRS instead, top gear are badge snobs

Because as lardo and slow as modern a Golf GTI is I'd much rather watch that against a Lambo than some boring Beemer.

Personally I doubt many would have switch the telly off or changed the channel just because a bimmer pulled up.

Why troll?

The discussion is why did they use a GTI when they could have used anything else, the bimmer is just the first thing that popped into my head.

In what way is watching a Golf accelerate any more interesting?

GTI badges... ;)

If Top Gear did what Phate is asking they would have been "inundated" with complaints about how boring and lame it is pitting a boring Beemer against the Lambo. The "hot" (by today's standards) Golf GTI is much more the average joe's cup of tea.

I see the point of the thread. Its not pointless like others make out.

Its just a question, why did'nt they use anything else.

Not much of a huge deal really.

You misunderstood me.

I said, in my opinion, a 330ci would have been a better comparison to a Lambo. I didn't say it was as fast as a Lambo.

Why

Why on earth would they put a normal sales rep 'mobile Vs a 'hypercar'

A Golf GTI is at least a decent GTI class car and probably as fast as the BMW anyway, plus I'd hazard a guess as a sports all rounder on the track it would be quite a bit quicker than a 330

If you'd said the Lambo Vs an M3 it might have made a bit more sense...

You either being incredibly daft or are just posting to deliberately wind up the BMW owners on this forum ;)

I'm not trolling, this thread is spam.

Go ahead and, post a debate about why they used a GTi, which rpstewart explained, that's a discussion.

But why they didn't use a completely random car that wasn't even in production at the time against the lambo is not a discussion.

The point was to illustrate the performance against your average performance car, a hot hatch, the GTi was a good example and was a homage like rpstewart posted out, how is a thread about why they didn't use a specific sports coupe not in production a decent discussion?

No it won't. I agree this thread is stupid and I think the Golf was a good choice for the test but really some of the Anti 330Ci comments are hilarious. A 330Ci Sport is not a 'boring rep mobile', the reps would be found in a 320d Saloon.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - only on OcUK is a 230bhp, 155mph RWD Coupe 'boring' yet any number of FWD hatches amazing and exciting.

lambo is VAG, golf is VAG.
BMW probably didnt want to have its cars tested against a VAG car.

write in to top gear mag and ask them why they chose the golf

So a 330Ci is an interesting car? Sorry but I'm not meaning to offend - it just isn't! It's about as boring as a car can get! Save for perhaps Punto's, Ka's and similar.

When was the last time you saw a car magazine with a 330Ci spread across the front cover?

If you said the Europa S was a boring car I would not be offended - I would tend to agree. Just to put this into perspective.

How do you figure that one out.

You dont like BMW's at all then?

dont mind some BMWs, but the drivers....not one bit, majority are ignorant snobs, make that badge snobs, how many BM owners can honestly hand on heart say theyve bought the car for performance???....its all about the 20k+ badge that sits on your drive and says "Im better than you"

a lot of people do not like the bmw 3'er owner image, they would just think its another bmw, regardless of what model it is and how capable it is. a golf is seen as a more normal persons car.

Are you being absolutely serious? A world filled with literally hundreds of thousands of cars and you reckon a 3litre, rear drive Coupe well reknowned for fantastic handling and great performance is 'about as boring as a car can get'? This on its own is comical, but to then state a 198bhp FWD VW Golf is 'very interesting' in comaparison takes the biscuit.

Total BMW 2 months ago. Last time a Golf GTI was spread across the front cover? Last time a Lotus Elise was?

Interesting cars don't make sense Fox :)

When you were young did you lust after exotic looking lambo's that looked great but were rubbish to drive, or dull to look at but technically superior BMW's

And to be fair what are the chances of a Golf GTI being spread on the front page of Total BMW mag hehe

Also personally I don't find powerful FWD cars interesting at all, in fact my thoughts on FWD car's are well documented on this forum, but I guess for Top Gear they wanted a bread and butter car to compare to their hyper car
