Interesting cars don't make sense Fox :)

When you were young did you lust after exotic looking lambo's that looked great but were rubbish to drive, or dull to look at but technically superior BMW's

you have to remember his age and his current history of cars, i think we all know what type he lusted after ;]

Lambo's. Any day. But thats not the point is it. I'm not disputing that the Lambo is a billion times more interesting. It's the silly opinions about a 330Ci being the 'most boring car in the world' which I take issue at. More boring than a Vectra? A Corsa? A Mondeo? A focus? A Ssangyong? A Carina? A Honda Legend? A Honda Jazz? etc etc ad finitum. Surely you can see how daft that comment was.

There is a difference between a car being not to your taste and 'the most boring car ever'.

I doubt you had a Golf GTI on your wall when you were young either, did you?

Also personally I don't find powerful FWD cars interesting at all, in fact my thoughts on FWD car's are well documented on this forum, but I guess for Top Gear they wanted a bread and butter car to compare to their hyper car

I quite agree. I'm disputing the opinions in this thread, not TG's choice of car, which I was in favour of.

Where did I say the Golf GTI is "very interesting". If you weren't so engrossed in starting arguments you'd have noticed I made it quite clear that I was speaking "from the general public's" point of view. I don't know *anybody* that would prefer to see a 330Ci on screen rather than a Golf GTI. It's just simple - I don't see how you can't "get" that.

Stop trying to make this personal Fox.

Let me just pause to take in the irony for a second.

Aaah.

Thats better. Right. You didn't say it, but you implied it by what you said. The fact you justified the chocie of car by laying into the 330 as 'the most boring car ever' implies you don't think the same of the VW Golf. I mean just look at what you said to make your point. What on earth has the magazine cover reference got to do with anything? TG Magazine and Evo are hardly adorned with VW Golfs either, are they?

And lets face it, this arguement is saving the thread becuase it was otherwise a worthless, pointless, stupid thread devoid of any discussional merit :D

In Summary:

a) TG chose a Golf becuase it's a useful benchmark as most peoples idea of a 'quick car'
b) The Golf was a good choice as a result
c) Chosing a 330Ci would have been daft as it's not a current production car.
d) A 330Ci is not a boring car unless compared directly to something like a Lambo. But in such circumstances, an FWD Golf is perhaps even more boring
e) If you are going to make sweeping generalisations, at least make them half-way fathomable. Calling 3 litre RWD Coupes more boring than anything that Perodua have produced just sounds stupid.

i did, was a mk1 in some lime green colour!
sure it had 2 engines in it

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't "lay into" the 330Ci, that is just what you perceived. I merely said it was boring and I stand by that. You can quote power figures and driven wheels as much as you like. The fact remains that millions of people would rather watch a Golf GTI than a 330Ci. You got completely ahead of yourself in burning bridges and judging from the smileys and lighter tone now you've realised that.

I agree... I love cars and i don't even know what a 330Ci looks like - well i do... but its just another car.... The Golf GTI is a LEGEND.

I'll just remind of you exactly what you said..

It's about as boring as a car can get!

Thats not simply saying somethings boring.

The fact remains that millions of people would rather watch a Golf GTI than a 330Ci.

I've already agreed with TG's choice of car. I just disagree with your opinion that there are few cars more boring than a BMW 330Ci Sport (A car which, before the ridiculous fanboy accusations surely begin, I would never buy).

agreed

TBH I hope they compare a Veyron to a 330CI just to shut everyone up :p

Pointless argument. They did it because they obviously thought it was the right thing to compare. The GTI badge has been synonymous with performance hatches since it was created (forgetting the woeful 2.0 mk3/4 GTI), and would therefore make more sense to the average Joe who watches the show for fast cars they're familiar with. Not everyone looks at a BMW 330 and knows how fast it is, there's a lot of cofusing model numbers in the BMW range, whereas a GTI is a GTI, plain and simple.

I'd have a 330 over a GTI most days though.

Actually your first disagreement was this "In what way is watching a Golf accelerate any more interesting?" and from there things were intentionally escalated by yourself - by, for example, selectively reading my posts as illustrated by you quoting only certain parts out of context. You went "in for the kill" as it were and then realised the premise for doing so was not correct when you stopped and actually re-read what I wrote.
