Sorry, think I've probably asked this before, but got my mate chasing me again now.

He's got an old rig of mine, XP2400, 1gb ram, AGP Geforce4 TI4800. He wants to upgrade his card to something for a reasonable (budget) price, but get a reasonable increase in performance.

I was along the lines of thinking that he won't get much benefit and assuming if he goes too far, he will be restricted by his CPU.

Thanks

Well far as im aware the biggest card he can get is something like an ATI 1950pro on AGP....But then they're about £100 or so...

So other than that he could go for something like a 6800gs/gt....or the 7xxx series maybe?

Depends how much he wants to spend, and whats available really :)

I think he was looking around the £50 mark but could stretch, but I'm guessing he will also need to replace his 400w PSU.

Just something really so that he can notice an increase in performance.

A 6800GT or X800XT should be around secondhand in that sort of budget, perhaps also a 7600GT and any of them would make for a great jump in performance but not overpower the CPU too much.

What brand is the PSU? 400w might well be ok for any of the above. :)

Have a look at what the label on the PSU says, if it offers 20A on the 12V rail or close to that then it is probably worth a shot but the only way to be sure is simply to try it. :)

Depends on which 7300GT it is, if it is a DDR3 version then it is probably the best option of the lot but if not then either of the other two should do. I'd still suggest you check the PSU though. :)

If you check the gaming forum there've been people running Bioshock at very good settings on 6800 cards so it'll definitely be an awesome upgrade for him!

have a search about mate, i picked up an X800 XTPE AGP for £45 for a friend of mine from chap on this very forum, was on par near enough with my 7600GT :)

ok, just spoken to him and suggested to me he wants to spend around £50 and obviously then new PSU. He wants to run the new game World In Conflict which I'm reading mixed reports about. Looking therefore for maybe either a 6800ultra or whether paying the extra for a used ATI X1950 Pro

Think he might still struggle, but then guess that's the case with all new games

in that case his cpu might be the problem

i have a 2800+, 1.5 gig ram and a 7600GS. runs ok but slows down when there's loads going on. ramped up the graphics a bit and it still plays at the same fps, hense my belief that the cpu is the bottleneck

The CPU could bottleneck but who knows? Definately for the 1950 pro though, my 6800 Ultra can't handle much these days.
