Hey,

Well i have managed to crash my latest bike the Yamaha FZ6. Was off to a friends house, was travelling on a B road which was quite rough, many farms on the way so was taking it easy. I came out off a corner when a pheasant ran out infront of me. My first reaction was to brake but i pulled my front brake a little to hard in the panic and managed to lock the front wheel, it seemed the second the wheel locked the bike just fell onto its side at about 50 mph and carried on down the road and came to a halt on a corner just in some thick grass. Once i had came off the bike i did many rolls and everything was just a blur at the speed i was rolling about at, and i hit a crash barrier with my helmet and then my right leg which is very soar now! and i came to a halt just a few metres from the bike.

i was wearing my full teknik leathers at the time and a shoei helmet. All i can say to the other bikers out there is please were your leathers if you have them. i never wore mine but i was lucky i did put them on for saturday. Both helmet and leathers did there job very well and are now finished. If i wasnt wearing my leathers i would be in a very bad state. I have just escaped with a lot of bruising and a badly sprained thumb. Also cut my hand were the stitching on the gloves gave up.

being 19 and i am going to loose 3 years NCB and have a claim on my record i cant imagine things are going to look good for my biking future :(

Damn dude unlucky, glad your ok, roads are nice and cold atm, takes much longer to warm the damn tyres up, came off my new gixxer last week, road was greasy only doing 15mph back wheel lost grip then gripped and high sided me lol and dropped on the floor, not much dmg to the bike but banged up my 3 days old new AGV helmet, so have had to buy a new one, kind of waste of £150 and not, annoying it was so new but lucky it did its job :p
Really gutting feeling crashing bike and ruining your gear, hope you get back up and running soon :D

That sucks, yea i hope i can get back up and running very soon, not sure if the bike is going to be wrote off, if it is i plan on gettin an SV650 as they are cheaper to insure, but if it isnt i wont be able to afford insurance on the FZ6 again as it will be going through the roof!

Is the damage on the bike bad enough to claim and lose your NCB? Can't you just fix it out of your own pocket and keep your NCB and a clean record?

i will probably find out tomorrow what the cost of the damage will be, but if it is low enough to justify keeping my NCB then i wouldnt claim off my insurance.

Yea also depends on his Excess aswell, as theres quite a lot of fairing damage which is annoyingly expensive to replace unless you can find some on the bay, but if it comes out less than excess not worth claiming.

Did you manage to lift it ok after your off? dont know how much the FZ weighs but when i came off i had a right time lifting her back up probably to do with shock aswell lol that and i didnt want to see the damaged side.

We get loads of pheasants around here and they're a real menace, I've already totalled one with the car this year and have had a couple of moments on the beemer. Anything squirrel-sized will probably just get squished but a big fat pheasant would easily take your front wheel out anyway, so you're pretty much out of options. Not much else to add, bad luck indeed but glad to hear you're just about intact.

It wasnt to bad to lift, but the shock of it all didnt help, it was some struggle. My excess is £225 for my policy, i can kinda see it costing a little more than that to fix :D

Ack yea thats a small excess, prob just the back fairing will cost around that much :/ let us know the repair quote.

Also the BIG point what are you going to get on your next bike.... CRASH BUNGS DAMIT, would have saves your front fairing and probably a lot of the engine damamge!!! best £60 ive spent so far on the bike lol

Lol crash bungs did nothing for me in that accident, will just upload a picture of the crash bung in the next 5 mins for you.

To be fair a lot of that looks to be cosmetic, perhaps the subrame on the front may be bent, but i'm sure you could get that back on the road yourself, no need to go through insurance, you'll save more cash doing it yourself than loosing your NCB.

Just give it a good clean and you'd be surprised how much better it will look. Get a new footpeg and rear brake lever, new mirror if it's broken and it will be fine. Depends if you think bankrupting yourself with a claim and making your insurance cost more for the next 5 years is worth a bit of blue plastic looking pretty.

Don't worry about losing the no claims etc, it's onlyt money and can be replaced even if it takes time. The main thing is you're ok and it sounds like your good quality gear played a respectable part in that :)

:o:o i was going on the assumtion that you didnt have any on there lol, but now that you did damn, they didnt work very well, what kind did you have? if they were nice big RnG ones i would be abit annoyed lol

heres a pic of the cheap ones that were with the bike when i bought it, i cursed them a lot saying they looked cheap and didnt stick out very far but thanked them so much that my bike wasnt damamged more, although this was only a 15-20mph off

Give the bike a good clean first, you can then see the actual damage without mud and filth all over it. The fairing nd seat unit don't look bad at all from the pics. Find a good paintshop that deal with a lot of motorcycle fairing repairs, you'll be amazed at what can be repaired with plastic welding etc. A friend of mine dropped his FZR400 years ago and smashed the fairing to bits, we collected all the little bits (loads of them, took bloody ages) the guy at the paint shop plastic welded it all back together and respayed it in its original colours and it looked fantastic, it was a far better paint job than Yamaha had originally given it :D.

Replace your footpeg hangers etc with new and leave the frame as a reminder to yourself not to panic brake next time (I had a handlbar shaped dent in my first decent bike for exactly the same reason ;) ).

Next time just hit the pheasant, they aren't very big just a bit of a bump :D. I live out in the sticks too, just make sure you miss the sheep.
