what card would be best to get for a true hdtv?

does the dvi-hdmi adapter option on the ati 2k series work ok or would it be better to get a card with a proper hdmi output on it?

Anything that's capable of outputting 1920x1080. That includes onboard.
Unless you have videocard HD acceleration, in which case Nvidia 85/86xx or ATI 24/26xx

what rez is the tv? 720p or 1080?
on my 1360x768 rez screen i use a x1950pro and it works quite well in lots of games at native screen rez, although 1360x768 is not hard to do compared to 1920x1080.

the tv is true hd (1920x1080) and its for blue ray and hd dvd mainly, no gaming.

wasn't sure what the quality was like when using a dvi to hdmi adapter compared to a card with a hdmi output.

was looking at the 2600xt or a 8600gts diamond plus but the 2600xt is quite a bit cheaper.

THe 2600xt is the best performer for HD Playback etc ;)
Takes a huge load off the CPU! Go for the the cheapest 2600xt you can get as that way you can get some decent gaming too
