Best place to buy sandpaper for lapping?

E-GAY (cant say real name).

Its hard as hell to get in UK these days as all peeps take car to be repaired in body shops as insured, I grew up in days when DAD's were out fixing holes in car body at weekends etc.

I used a shop on there, he was fast and I got 1 kit with Glass and others without.

I think 1200 should be suffice, although you can get grades up to 2500 and beyond. My dad uses some that are 3 micron grade for sanding the ends of optical fibres, im thinking that may be taking it a bit too far though :D

You can get a mirror finish using just the 1200 and then finishing it off with some chrome polish.

Alternatively, apply some of that Coollaboratory Liquid Pro thermal interface - by the time you've got that off your CPU, it'll be shining like a new pin!!! ;)

(and yes, I speak from experience!!)

Halford has crap when I tried, all their own brand and I never got good selection.

I used to be able to buy any grade 3M years ago. :(

To get shiny use Brasso or Silvo then wash it completely in ISO PROPYLN as you do not want resindue left on (you really dont need do that stage its for bling, altough will plice out swirl marks.

I bought a pack of various grit sandpaper (1x 400, 1x 600, 1x 800, 1x 1000, 1x 1200, 1x1500, 1x 2000 & 1x 2500) from the well known auction site for the princely sum of £3.74 delivered.

I assume the best place to buy ISO prop is your local chemists shop?

Yeah, the well known auction site is the best place to get proper waterproof sandpaper that is best for lapping a heatsink. I stopped at 1000 grit on my TRUE 120 and the finish, albeit not mirror reflective, is perfectly flat and smooth. That's all you need.

400 for level, 800 for smooth, 1200 for perfectly flat and higher for mirror finish.

Support your local independent hardware shop, rather than big stores!

yes but they can ask a lot of questions ;)

From what I read on various tweak forums is that the max grit you should use is 800. I would post a link but cant find it. Anything above 800 can have a negative effect. From my experience at least this is true as my temps were higher with a 1200 grit mirror finish than finishing with 800 grit.
