Hi,

I was just wondering what the difference in the diesel engines in the VW Polo's are? namely the 1.9SDI and the 1.4TDI?

Actually wait...what would be the better car in your opinion out of this list?

VW Polo 1.4 TDI Twist
VW Polo 1.9 SDI Twist
Ford Focus Edge 1.8 Diesel
Mitsi Colt 1.5 DiD Equippe
Pug 206 1.4 HDi
Renault Clio 1.5 DCi - Not sure on exact spec, 15" Alloys - Dynamique maybe?
Renault Megane 1.5 DCi Dynamique

I know they're all diesel, I prefer diesel over petrol :o They're all more or less the same price and 2004 or 2005, and 10,000 - 20,000 miles. The Clio is the odd one out with 4000 miles, and about £750 cheaper than the rest.

I do have to say, I rather like Polo's, so I'm tempted to get one of them. Am I being daft?

Out of those, I'd say the Focus.. its the one i'd have ne way, what year is the Megane?

They did a top gear episode with 2 Polos as well, they get insane fuel economy dont they?

The Megane is 2005.

Yeah, the Polo's (on Parkers) are 61 MPG for the TDI and 59 MPG on the SDI. It'd be like driving my old Citroen AX again. :P

Dont think i've heard a bad thing on the newer shaped Meganes, i'd have that one too :p they have no bigger engines away from the 1.5?... Presume its the hatch being the 1.5 too... normally extremley well kitted ..

Edit: Just read up on Parkers, say some have a few elctrical and Mechanical gremlins (It is Frech I suppose though)

My mum has an 05 megane, its pretty good! Gets great economy when i drive it occaisionally, only thing that catches me out is the brakes.. They lob me into the windscreen at the slightest touch! Full off to full on is less than a mm :p

*not so ninja edit of mispelling of Brakes*

When I spent my time hiring group D hire cars (1.6 Petrol / 1.5 Diesels), I must admit that my favourite was the Megane. Not sure if I would buy one due to possible electrical problems and other issues caused by Frenchness (French cars are very like French people!) but it was the most enjoyable and most comfortable. You also tend to get a lot of toys (which of course electrical and french WILL break down at some point)

Although I've never driven a higher end Focus I didn't like the lower models (LX, Zetec etc)... . Didn't like the brakes ... use to scare the crap out of me on the motorway when doing the usual 70 to 30 slow down.

And also if you want smaller... if your price covers it, have you considered a Mini ONE D? It has Mini's 1.6 Engine (Unless its an R56 then it would be a 1.4)

Out of the Polo 1.9SDI and 1.4TDI defo go for the 1.4TDI my mum has this in a Fabia estate and its surprisingly swift when required and returns a pretty constant 55mpg the Polo should do more as it lighter than the estate Fabia. On a long run down south at a pretty constant 75 it hit 71mpg fully loaded with camping stuff. However it struggles under 2000 revs but your driving style does adjust quickly to it. If you get bored a remap can take it to around 110bhp not bad for a 1.4 3 cylinder diesel.

The 1.9SDI is a slow non turbo engine and a very old engine design so best to avoid personally. You can get the 130bhp 1.9 TDI in the Polo GT trim not a lot about as most people went for the Fabia vRS or Ibiza FR these are a good buy if you find one.

Out of the list you have given for me it would be the Polo or Focus, Focus would be bigger and handle better if you are flinging it round the corners however the diesel engines in Polo would be better (assuming you avoid the 1.9SDI) than the old 1.8TD engine in the Focus.

Is that a joke because i've heard nothing but bad things about the Megane....

Re-read my post.. I went and did some reasearch, that was based on what knowledge I have.. I then re-edited and said that they were plagued with gremlins in the electrics and mechanics.

Really wish people would read posts in full...

Well I don't want any plague of gremlins, so that's the Megane off the list. Should I boot the Clio off too?

Also, anyone know much about the Mitsi Colt? It seems to be pretty well specced.

We have of course forgot to ask the important questions:

What do you want the car for? (Long distances, commute to Uni etc)
What are you looking for in a car? (Any reason you want a supermini?)
How many miles a year do you expect to do? (Under 15K and a Diesel isn't that attractive ... unless you prefer diesels)

Just pottering about back and forth across town. I don't do a whole lot of long journeys.

Something that will just go in the mornings. Don't need a larger car. Vast majority of the time there will only be at most two people in it, and possibly my dog.

Prefer diesels tbh. Probably due to me doing a large chunk of my learning in a diesel. I wont be budging on the fuel type. :)
