spec me a cheap meal

Cheap and simple.

Boil some Penne and leave to cool in a large Tupperware container. Throw in some real mayonnaise, a tin of sweetcorn, a few chopped spring onions and a tin of ham (diced). Stir it with a wooden spoon until it's mixed well and then enjoy.

can i ask why is your budget so low that you cant afford food? what are you spending the money you have on?

failure ?

people have to learn how and what to cook somewhere .... why not on a computer forum :D

i dont go in the overclocking sections and call people failures for asking how to overclock , or call people failures for asking track IDs in the music section

obviously the best thing to do would be to join a food forum if such thing exsists but why bother when most people here are so helpful :)

Because overclocking is quite complex, while feeding yourself, well...

Pre Cooked Dells? are they broiled? stuffed? roasted? :p

seriously, just have a ponder round Tesco, buy yourself a couple of "student" cookbooks (I have one that is called "One Pot" which shows how you make all meals, in, well one pot!)

Best thing to do is figure out a dozen or so meals, how to make them and then you know what to buy!

BBC Food is good!

Sorry if it seemed I was ribbing you was only messing about, learn to cook! it's fun! only hobby you can eat!

cheers ,yea it was more the people who just quoted each other negative comments with no other input that got to me :D

for some reason i never even thought of a cookbook  im too used to using the internet/tv ( that i dont really have now ) for stuff like this that i forgot such things existed :o

i have money ? thats new to me ! dont start work for 2 weeks so damn skint till then . spent this weeks budget on books/drawing equpimenr/calculator and last weeks on booze although id saved that money up from me summer job .

and i havent not eaten because i needed some to "hold my hand" its because i havent really been hungry till now , and i didnt want to just go out to M&S and buy a pre cooked meal like it seems OCUK student budget experts do... ( see that other thread about uni budgeting :p

thanks again people , its nice that theres always people to help on here :)

anyway i went shopping after the first lot of posts anyway , lots of cheap on offer pasta , chicken fillets where buy one get one free so wherent "too" expensive although i see what you mean ! , same goes for sausages

branded curry sauces where 3 for 2 quid which i thought was quite good as i enjoy eating that and a jar will do me about 3 servings of curry maybe. i can see allot of pasta and chicken curry getting consumed over the next few month thats for sure .

best thing about here is i wont eat crap just because i have it there to eat ,

basically everything i remembered from the thread that i seen on offer or was cheap i bought

will go to the market or something tomorrow for veg as i know its cheaper and better usually

Veggie Chilli is nice that I make thats cheap

Tesco Value chopped tomatos, kidney beans, new potatoes (all tinned here).
Pack of fresh chillis.
Salt / Pepper.
Your bag of rice :p

Just pop the tomatos, kidney beans, into a pot chop up the potatoes into chunks and stick them in too, cut chillis in half, remove seeds and chop finely and stuff them in - simmer on low for about 15-20 mins to let it reduce down and get thick, stir in some salt and pepper to taste and leave to simmer for longer (10-15 mins)

Rice, one cup rice to two cups water, pinch of salt in there too, boil for about 12-14 mins, drain and serve! stick chilli on top!

Wash the rice in a sieve first till the water coming out of the bottom is clear if you like non sticky rice.

This is something I make when I am a bit low on funds, costs about £1.20 and can make two meals if you bung the whole of each tin in - if I am a bit more flush stick some mince beef or quorn beef or whatever you prefer in, and stick some chilli powder in too for taste!

jonny knows what hes talking about when it comes to good cheap food and il stick a nice chilli recipe up once ive finished eatting it ;)

Any vege mexican / chilli recipies will be hoovered up here - I love mexican and chilli's but 1) rely on jars and 2) red meat is a bit pricey and isn't good for me :(

Have you got a freezer?
If you do cheap meals = large quantities.

Failing that most mince meals are very cheap.
chilli, spag bol, lasagne, pasta bakes etc.

I find mince meals expensive.

Stews that use a bit of cheap meat for flavour, and a lot of veg for bulk are cheaper.
Pasta and tomato sauces are cheapest.
Cous Cous (I like the lemon one asda does) and a chicken breast are fairly cheap (splash a bit out on various jars of herbs & spices and you can make the chicken all sorts of flavours - keep them in freezer, put a bit of oil on, coat in herbs, cook in foil in the oven for 40 mins)

One of my staple dishes at uni was a rice salad, thus:

-Cheddar cheese, chopped up into small cubes
-Peppers (2 out of green/red/yellow) slices into small, halved strips.
-Cucumber, sliced thick and then cut into small triangles

Mix it all in with the rice, the cheese cubes melt around the edges due to the heat. Yummy.

The key to a chilli is lots of cumin. Either buy it as a powder or grind up some seeds in a pestle and mortar. Add as much as you think you need and then the same again.

You'll also want lots of fresh chillis then add some encona sauce and chilli powder for good measure.

And lots of garlic.

Mince is really cheap!

Not keen on mince though - what vege's do people put in it's place?

ps. just noticed, the cumin seeds I have in a jar smell just like the discovery chilli sauce I like so much - good tip.

It would probably be fine with just the kidney beans, in a jacket potato.

I suppose you could use Tofu although I've never tried it.

I've seen Turkey mince in the supermarket.

Taste isn't hugely relevant since you won't if the chilli is hot enough :p.

Ingredients:
- Baking Potatoes (2, large)
- Philadelphia or Philadelphia Light (Half of the small pack)
- Cheddar Cheese (to your own preferences)
- Butter

Cooking Instructions:
- Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees (Gas Mark 5).
- Wash Potatoes, pierce evenly spaced, deep holes in them using a fork - 12 should do. Use hands to cover each potato with butter.
- Place in baking tray, let potatoes back for roughly 60 minutes.
- Once baked, cut each potato in half and scoop out the contents into a bowl/glass/mug (whatever you have lying around). Keep the skins.
- Add to the scooped out potatoes the half pack of Philadelphia and some of the cheddar cheese (grated) and some butter. Use fork to blend this nicely.
- Scoop potato mix back into the skins and place into the oven again for another 5 minutes.
- Remove potatoes and add some more grated cheese on top. Serve.
