Don't know a lot about them but really am liking the idea of getting one of these around the 3k mark, remap it, and see how it goes. Cheap tax is a bonus and I like the looks of the kitted up ones on 17's (in the right colour I think they look sporty classy combined) but know nothing about them really.

Any good?

What kind of power can you get from a remap?

Reliable (as in no HGF to worry about?)

3 grand (ish) alternatives no bigger than the ZR as I know those who don't read will want to suggest some lol.

Ta guys :)

I've got the 1.8 petrol - I've had it for about 18 months now (bought April 2006)

Any good?

Yep

Handle very well, great fun to drive, lots and lots of feel without any irritating electronics getting in the way. Very crude but in a good way. Make sure you get the '+' spec though as the basic spec is very very basic!

Not great travelling cars as they're rather noisy at speed and the diesel isn't all that refined, although rather reliable

Not sure about that

Yep. The diesel uses the Rover L-Series engine, very reliable if rather noisy, not the infamous K-Series engine

The ZR is a funny size, being about half way between a supermini and a small hatch

I'd look at stuff like Clio 172s, Mk 4 Astra SRIs, etc

The only other option to me (which of course will raise eyebrows in comparison) is a Clio 172 if I don't go for the MG as nothing else really interests me, focus's, astra's = bland lol.

Just signed up to MG-Rover.org so can do some digging on these things. I don't mind a bit of noise from the engine as I'll probably put an exhaust on it anyway (my choice lol) but power and some kinda economy sounds fun really if I could get around 150BHP from it. Like the fact they're cheap tax too.

Cheers for the reply mate :D

You're welcome :)

I'm on MG-Rover.org too under the same username (ajgoodfellow) :)

I also looked at the Clio 172 but the insurance was rather huge in comparison and I rather liked the crudeness and fun from the MG

A remap will yield no more than about 130-135bhp, after which you are reaching the limits of the pump with the stock injectors.

Then I suggest you head over to MGRover.org and investigate the posts of one 'wingy777'. You might be in for a pleasant surprise. The stock pump and injectors will throw out 20,000psi. More than enough for 170bhp

And I suggest you check out the modifications he's done to achieve that! As I said, with stock injectors the pump maxes out at around 135bhp. Wingy has had modified injectors with lower break pressure, which means the pump can inject a little more fuel (due to mechanical slop, expasnaion of injectors pipes etc). The downside is that atomisation quality is reduced, so giving more smoke. That said I am a little dubious that an extra 35bhp's worth of fuel can be released.

He's also had a decat, sports exhaust system, ported manifolds, bigger intercooler, wound up the boost and a numer of other mods. Not really a remap.

I'd be after the 115BHP one as a base car if I have one.

172 would be loads of fun but small, hard, twitchy and lot more expensive to run... I want the best of both worlds which just doesn't happen in real life lol. I've got a Corsa Sport 1.6 at the mo so either will be an upgrade from that!

Ta for the advice anyway guys, gonna read a bit more on diesel tuning and costs involved and weigh it up. I do for some reason prefer the looks of the MG's though!

Ooooo a MG TD thread (can't do a forum search for MG or any of MG range as they are all the cars 2 characters and the search needs at least 3)

Did you get round to getting a ZR TD? I’ve just bought a MG ZS TD+ (115) cracking car :) really happy with it
