Smoking in your car could now get you points and fine!!!

This is getting redicilous!!!

How does smoking a cig cause a distraction?

Hand is off of wheel to take a drag, hand is then busy flicking ash out of window or in ashtray. Then what happens when you drop said burning red-hot fag between legs on car seat while also trying to contrate on the road? Nah... they aren't a distration at all are they...

I think I am missing something here, but which new law or extention to a law prohibits smoking in cars? AFAIK the new version of the Highway code simply states that a smoker would be liable to prosecution if an officer thought that it was causing them to drive without due care and attention. The police have always had this power anyway, so whats the big fuss?

Considering its now illegal to smoke in the workplace, I'm yet to find a fellow HGV driver who's been done by a copper for smoking in his cab.

Frankly, I think the Police have bigger fish to fry.

I doubt we'll see many car drivers getting done for merely smoking.

What next, banning talking to passengers???

A mum on the school run trying to control a couple of rugrats in the back seat is far more dangarous than eating or smoking at the wheel..

I often eat at the wheel, choccy bars etc, no sunday lunch :) and more than not have a bottle of coke and I smoke while driving, none of which I would consider dangerous. Mobile phones are dangerous.

The police are not really interested I would guess, as police have seen me while smoking & driving, and having a gulp of drink..

Stupid government :(

IF the driver is the main driver of the lorry and he doesn't take anyone else or anyone else drives it on a regular basis, then he cannot legally smoke, but I doubt the police are bothered :D

Yah. My car gets full of drink bottles, I have to empty it every now and then :p Looks like a right teenager mobile (even though I'm not a teenager anymore :().

Er, how many people drive with both hands on the wheel all the time...

Also, I have never dropped a smoke in my lap whilst driving. Also, I can do two things at once, I don't need to look or concentrate on smoking, so how is it affecting my driving?

Aye same for us company car drivers, mind you our company has deemed all van drivers cannot smoke at all.

I wish we could get more cops back on the roads, the amount of truckers i see txting is scary, same for people on the phone generally, whats the point of laws if they arent going to be enforced.

Not driving with two hands yet having one ready for action isn't the same as not driving with two hands holding a burning fag.

Also, I have never dropped a smoke in my lap whilst driving.

So because you haven't yet, you never will. Interesting err... logic. ;)

I'm sure lots of people cry "but I can do two things at once" right before they have an accident. Fact is when driving you should only ever be doing ONE thing at once. Imo attitudes like yours are dangerous, anyone who believes they can do something else while driving and believe they aren't ever going to crash shouldn't be on the road. Complacency is a drivers worst enemy, and one of the biggest cause of accidents. Just my opinion.

Absolutely, i just takes a split second, you may just have looked at the radio or something briefly and bam, accident time.

Even with my handfree kit, i know when im on the phone im not concentrating fully at all.

And how is that going to stop me turning the wheel or braking

Its not logic, just fact, why would I drop it?? I don't drop it when at home, or walking down the street...

So you never talk to passengers, or look at a pretty girl walking on the path, or change your radio station? My attitude isn't dangerous what-so-ever, I take driving very seriously and it has my full concentration, hence only one accident (not my fault) in 14 years/500,000 miles at least.

I agree that complacency is a big cause of accidents, but do not judge my driving unless you have been in a car with me, thank you :)

Load of tosh. I will continue to smoke behind the wheel, safe in the knowlege that I am still a better driver than 99% of the idiots out there.

As far as I understand it, you are only likely to get prosecuted if it can be shown having a tab was instrumental in causing an accident.

As for smoking causing a distraction - again, load of tosh. If you are a smoker, getting a fag out of the packet, lighting and smoking are as second nature to you as non smokers making a big show of feigning a coughing fit when they see a smoker enjoying a snout.

I accept if you were a full on moon face and regularly dropped your cancer stick on yourself/the floor in the car this could cause a problem. However if you were that much of a window licker as to do it on a regular basis, you shouldn't be on the road in the first place.

I have been banned from enjoying a coffin nail in public places, I'm damned if I'm going to be stopped from doing so in the car.

i dont have 2 hands on steering wheel generally. I dont drive like learner drivers.
most of my friends and family are the same. It is not necessary to have 2 hands on stearing wheel

The lorry will get driven by others (e.g. mechanics) so its nigh impossible to get around it.

I had to laugh a while back, just after the ban came into force, a Police car pulled alongside me on the motorway, the copper wagged his finger at me as I was smoking - in his finger, he had a cigarette!

(Police cars are workplaces too!)

2 hands on the wheel is the way forward my friend.

If you hit a pot hole, aquaplane, someone gets in the way, you have a blowout, etc... etc...
