FAO: OCuK. HR-03 / R600..or other after market 2900 coolers?

I will be installing one of these tomorrow. Had my HD2900XT a couple of days now. Hits the 858/900(1800) cap using Overdrive on the stock fan idle at 47c, any recommendations of what to use to go beyond that?

Do you guys all have fans installed on yours? I'm looking to get one of these because my card overclock is limited by temperature at the moment and I can't handle the noise of a fan at 75% just to keep the card cool.

Check the pics in the thread. ;)

But yes, I think we've all put fans on so far. I'm using one of these, running full whack at 1500rpm and it's no louder than the general noise of my other case fans. And certainly a darn sight quieter than the stock fan running at 30 odd percent, or what ever the default is it kicked into when running 3d clocks.

CaNNoN's fan goes up to 2800rpm but he's running at around 1800rpm and we've both seen good temp drops over the stock cooler.

Had a quick go at clocking my card earlier to just over 800/900 and it's still cooler than at stock with the old cooler running at 30%.

i assume basically that if you have any 1/2 decent aftermarket cooler fitting above the card is a no no, atleast with a fan

thing is, is this any good without? could i perhaps allow heattransfer into my tuniq tower and let that deal with it? (if this is even thermally possible)

I did wonder that myself tbh. I think with my setup I could just about squeeze it in above the card with no fan and wondered if the fan on my Noctua cooler and the rear case fan would be enough to suck the heat away from the HR-03 and possibly even fit another fan to the other side of the Noctua?

From an earlier link I posted in the thread, this guy has managed to fit his above with a fan, warning big pic.

Actually looking at that thread someone else has posted with a fan above but they seem to be having issues securing it as the north bridge nb seems to get in the way.

But he does also mention he ran it passively with out the fan and looking at the temps he posted it wasn't a huge difference. But then he has his CPU fans blowing up, something I was thinking of trying myself. As I should then be able to get the HR-03+fan above my card and have the whole lot push air up through the PSU and use that to vent out the back.

But yeah, thermally it should be possible as the heat will rise it just depends on would it be enough.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet, finally installed it with a zalman 92mm fan and I can now push my 2900XT to 885/1035 :) All under 70 degrees on load. Also means I get 14.7k in 06 :)

cheers, may or may not get one, thinking of just tolerating the noise till some new cards come along, usually have headphones on, so its only a nuisance for the rest of the family hehe

Fit one of these a few days ago, basically just to get rid of the damn card fan noise.

So far I've been running all the usual games like Bioshock on max settings at 1900x1200 with no issues and ArmA sessions for hours also. This is with no fan on the heatsink, although i did order a sharkoon anyway just in case.

I've not overclocked the card that much as Im not really bothered about overclocking really. Think i just knocked the sliders up a few notches in rivatuner.

Paradiso, hows the temperatures? Also, I was thinking about getting one of these and wondered if you fit this yourself or had someone else do it around Portsmouth?

With the price of just that heatsink alone, it seems more beneficial to just get a cheap water cooling kit than spend nearly £40 on this.
